✈️ Getting there

BKIKota Kinabalu International Airport
📍 8 km20 min🚌 Grab🚕 Taxi🚌 Bus

Grab is the cheapest and most reliable option at RM 10–20 for the 15–20 minute ride to the city centre — exit next to KFC in arrivals and walk to pick-up Pillar 5; the city bus runs until 8:15 pm for just RM 5 if you're on a tight budget.

A compact, well-organised two-terminal airport served primarily by AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Scoot, and Batik Air Malaysia, with direct connections from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and a handful of regional Asian cities — manageable and efficient even during peak periods.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Kota Kinabalu — beyond the tourist trail.

🌅Watch the sunset from Tanjung Aru Beach, voted one of the world's best sunset spots — position yourself on the southern end away from the beach bar crowds and arrive 45 minutes before dusk for the full show.
🏝️Island-hop in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park: take the ferry from Jesselton Point to Mamutik Island first (the smallest, fewest people), snorkel the coral, then hop to Sapi for the beach. The whole thing costs under RM 50 including the ferry.
🛒Hit Gaya Street Sunday Market between 7 and 9 am before the heat sets in — the stalls selling wild honey, jungle produce, and Kadazan-Dusun handicrafts are the best part, not the tourist section near the end of the street.
🍜Eat Laksa at Yee Fung Restaurant (40 years in business) — the Sabah-style laksa uses a coconut-free, clear prawn broth that's completely different from the Penang version. Arrive before 11 am or expect a queue.
🌿If you're booking Mount Kinabalu, do it at least 3 months in advance — only 185 climbers are allowed per day and permits sell out fast. The summit trail requires an overnight stay; budget RM 1,200–1,800 all-in including guide.
