The S1 S-Bahn line runs directly from the airport to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof every 10 minutes for €3.60 — the fastest and cheapest option, taking around 25 minutes.

A compact, well-organised airport close to the city centre, used by Lufthansa, easyJet, Ryanair, and most major European carriers — Terminal 1 and 2 are connected and easy to navigate.

🎵Visit the Elbphilharmonie's public plaza (the Plaza level is free) at any time of day for unbeatable harbour views — then book a concert in advance if you can. Even the acoustics in the foyer are designed to be experienced.

🌊Walk the Alster Lakes at dusk — rent a kayak or paddleboard from Alster Touristik on the Binnenalster for about €15/hour and paddle out as the city lights come on. Early September is perfect.

🐟Get to the Fischmarkt by 6am on a Sunday — the auction hall opens at dawn and the fish sellers' theatrical pitches are legendary. Eat an Aalsuppe (eel soup) from one of the stalls before 8am when it winds down.

🏗️Explore HafenCity on foot — Europe's largest inner-city development has hit its stride and the combination of red-brick warehouse conversions and bold contemporary architecture around the Magdeburger Hafen is genuinely impressive. Free to wander, best on a weekday morning.

🎨Don't skip the Hamburger Kunsthalle — the northern German Romantic collection (Caspar David Friedrich's 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' is here) and the 20th-century wing are among the best in Germany. Go on Thursday when it's open until 9pm and much quieter.
