Dubrovnik is the Croatian Adriatic's crown jewel — a perfectly preserved medieval walled city rising from limestone cliffs above a sea of impossible turquoise, its marble streets and baroque architecture making it one of the most visually stunning urban environments in Europe. The walls walk — a complete circuit of the 14th-century fortifications offering panoramic sea and rooftop views — is rightly famous and should be done at first light to avoid the cruise-ship crowds.

Don't miss
Walk the 2km City Walls at 8am sharp — tickets open at 8 and the route is half-empty before 10am. The southeast bastion gives you the best view of Old Town rooftops and the sea simultaneously.
Take the Žičara cable car to Mount Srđ at sunset (last ride down is 30 min after sunset). The 412m summit view over the walled city lit gold is genuinely spectacular — book the return online to skip queues.
Swim at Buža Bar — a cliff-side bar with no sign, accessed through a hole in the old city walls (look for 'cold drinks' painted on the stone near Ulica od Margarite). Jump from the rocks or sip a beer 10m above the Adriatic.
Take the morning ferry from Gruž harbour to Lopud Island (Elafiti group, 50 min, ~€5 each way). Walk 25 minutes across the island to Šunj Beach — a rare sandy beach in this rocky coastline, almost deserted on weekdays.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
City Walls at dawn
Queue at the Pile Gate ticket office for 8am opening and start the 2km wall circuit immediately — the low sun catches the limestone perfectly and you'll have it almost to yourself for the first hour.
Stradun stroll and Onofrio's Fountain
Walk the full length of the marble-paved Stradun, stopping at the Large Onofrio Fountain. Duck into the side streets — Ulica od Puča has excellent local bakeries for burek.
Lokrum Island afternoon
Ferries leave Old Town harbour every 30 minutes (€3 return). Spend the afternoon swimming in the salt lake, exploring the Benedictine monastery ruins, and spotting the resident peacocks.
Konoba Ekvinocijo
Family-run spot just outside the Pile Gate with honest Dalmatian cooking — grilled fish by weight, peka lamb if ordered ahead. Half the price of Old Town restaurants.
Day 2
Dominican Monastery and treasury
One of Dubrovnik's most underrated sights — a stunning Gothic cloister and a treasury with Titian and Blaž Jurjev Trogiranin paintings. Arrives before 10am to avoid tour groups.
Buža Bar and cliff swimming
Find the unmarked entrance through the city walls near Ulica od Margarite — follow 'cold drinks' painted on stone. Spend a few hours swimming off the rocks and having a cold Karlovačko.
Cable car to Mount Srđ at sunset
Pre-book the cable car online (€20 return) for the 30 minutes before sunset slot. Walk up to the Napoleonic fortress at the summit for an unobstructed 360-degree panorama.
Nautika
Splurge-worthy terrace restaurant perched on the rocks below the western city walls — Adriatic seafood at its most elegant, best table in the city for a special evening.
Day 3
Rector's Palace
The most atmospheric museum in Dubrovnik — a Gothic-Renaissance palace that was the seat of the Republic of Ragusa. Go early (opens 9am) and listen for the baroque harpsichord concerts sometimes held in the atrium.
Gruž market and harbour
Walk 20 minutes from the old town to the real-life waterfront market where locals buy their fish and vegetables — far more authentic than anything inside the walls.
Elaphite island day trip
Catch the morning public ferry from Gruž to Lopud (~50 min, €5), walk to Šunj sandy beach and swim, then take the late ferry back before your evening flight.
Pantarul
The best modern Croatian cooking in the city — a short walk from the old town in Lapad, with a menu that changes daily based on market produce. Book ahead.
