Don't miss
Sit on the steps of the Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) at dusk — the sound changes with the swell, and the 20-minute window before sunset when the Sun Salutation disc also activates is genuinely magical. Come in shoulder season (May or September) to avoid crowds.
Walk the Roman Forum at 8am before tour groups arrive — the columns of St Donatus Basilica glow amber in the morning light and you'll have the square almost to yourself. The basilica hosts summer classical concerts worth booking ahead.
Take the 15-minute Jadrolinija ferry to the island of Ugljan for a half-day. The village of Kali has a fishing harbour, a konoba serving grilled fish for lunch, and zero tour buses. Return ticket is under €5.
Seek out Pošip and Grk white wines from the nearby islands at any wine bar on Ul. Špire Brusine — these indigenous Croatian grape varieties are barely known outside Dalmatia and are spectacular with local cheese. Pet Bunara restaurant has one of the best lists.
Weekend itinerary · 2 days
Day 1
Roman Forum & St Donatus
Start your morning on the Forum — Rome's largest in Eastern Adriatic, still used as a public square. Go inside St Donatus Basilica (small entry fee) for the extraordinary acoustics and early Christian stonework.
Old Town Walls & Land Gate
Walk the full perimeter of the old town peninsula along the waterfront promenade to the 16th-century Land Gate, the main ceremonial entrance. The Venetian lion relief above the arch is one of the best-preserved in Dalmatia.
Sea Organ & Sun Salutation at sunset
Be at the western tip of the peninsula by 30 minutes before sunset. Sit on the marble steps over the Sea Organ pipes, then watch the 300-panel solar disc light up as dusk falls. This is the moment Hitchcock talked about.
Pet Bunara
A stone-walled wine bar and restaurant on Five Wells Square — order the Dalmatian charcuterie board and a glass of local Pošip white, then linger. Widely considered the best wine list in old town Zadar.
Day 2
Jadrolinija ferry to Ugljan
Take the 7:30 or 9:00 morning ferry from Zadar harbour to Preko on Ugljan island (15 min, under €5 return). Hire a bike at the harbour and ride south to the village of Kali — a working fishing port with almost no tourists.
Snorkelling off Ugljan's east coast
The rocky coves south of Kali have excellent visibility and sea grass beds — bring a mask and fins from Zadar (rentable near Kolovare beach). The water is clearest before noon.
Museum of Ancient Glass
Back in Zadar old town, this underrated museum on Poljana Zemaljskog Odbora holds one of the finest Roman glass collections in Europe — perfume bottles, surgical instruments, and drinking vessels recovered from Dalmatian seabeds. Budget 45 minutes.
Konoba Bonaca
A no-frills family konoba a short walk from the old town — order whatever fresh fish is chalked on the board that day, with a carafe of house white. Popular with locals at lunch, so arrive before 13:00.
