✈️ Airbus A321neo

The stretched narrowbody that now crosses the Atlantic

The Airbus A321neo (New Engine Option) is the longest member of the A320neo family, stretched to carry up to 244 passengers. The 'neo' variants use CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney GTF (geared turbofan) engines delivering 15–20% lower fuel burn than the older ceo generation. The A321XLR variant β€” entering service in 2025 β€” extends range to 8,700 km, enabling true transatlantic narrowbody service: London to New York, or Madrid to the US East Coast. The A321neo has become one of the most popular aircraft orders in history.

Comfort review

The A321neo competes directly with the 737 MAX 9/10 and wins on cabin feel for many passengers. The A320 family's wider fuselage cross-section gives Economy seats about 1–2 cm more width than on a 737. The Airspace cabin interior (on newer deliveries) adds larger overhead bins, improved lighting, and wider aisle space. On LR/XLR variants configured for medium-haul, Business Class seats with lie-flat capability are becoming available β€” a genuine comfort upgrade for transatlantic narrowbody travel.

πŸ›‹οΈ

Wider than 737

A320 family fuselage is slightly wider (3.96 m cabin width vs 3.76 m on 737) β€” Economy seats are ~1 cm wider.

πŸ”‡

GTF engine noise

Pratt & Whitney GTF engines are significantly quieter inside the cabin than CFM56 β€” one of the quietest narrowbody engines.

🧳

Airspace bins

On Airspace-configured A321neos, overhead bins are 60% larger than on the A320ceo β€” real improvement for carry-on.

🌊

XLR transatlantic

A321XLR brings narrowbody economics to transatlantic routes β€” more airlines, more routes, potentially lower fares.

β›½

GTF efficiency

20% lower fuel burn than ceo-generation β€” airlines pass savings on via competitive fares on medium-haul routes.

Seat note: Standard Economy is 3-3 (same as 737 MAX), but the slightly wider A320-family fuselage gives marginally more elbow room. British Airways and Finnair use the A321neo on transatlantic routes with a proper Business Class (flat-bed/angled). Wizz Air and easyJet use dense 3-3 all-Economy layouts. The A321XLR operated by Iberia and American Airlines for transatlantic routes will feature Business Class flatbeds on many configurations.

Passenger tips for the A321neo

  • βœ“

On Wizz Air or easyJet A321neo, Extra Legroom seats (exit rows, bulkheads) are worth the fee on anything over 2 hours.

  • βœ“

The Pratt & Whitney GTF-powered A321neo is notably quieter than the CFM LEAP variant β€” there's no easy way to know which engine your flight has without checking the tail number.

  • βœ“

British Airways A321XLR transatlantic Economy is a genuine option for budget-conscious travellers β€” shorter journey, lower fare than widebody alternatives.

  • βœ“

On Finnair A321neo, the Airspace overhead bins are truly large β€” full-size trolley bags fit easily even when boarding late.

  • βœ“

Iberia A321XLR Business Class (Cama) flat-bed from Madrid to US East Coast is exceptional value when booked with Avios via Iberia Plus.

  • βœ“

Check if your A321neo has the Airspace interior (look for curved cabin ceiling and LED ambient lighting) β€” older deliveries have the V2500-era cabin feel.
