✈️ Getting there

SOFSofia Airport
📍 10 km30 min🚇 Metro🚌 Bus🚕 Taxi

Metro Line 1 connects the airport directly to the city centre (Lions Bridge and beyond) in about 20 minutes for BGN 1.60 (roughly €0.80) — the cheapest and most reliable option, running from Terminal 2 every 5-7 minutes during the day.

Sofia Airport handles a mix of Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, and full-service carriers including Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines — two terminals connected by a free shuttle bus, with Terminal 2 handling most international low-cost flights.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Sofia — beyond the tourist trail.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is stunning at any time, but the crypt icon museum beneath it (€4, separate entrance on the east side) houses an extraordinary collection of medieval Bulgarian Orthodox icons rarely mentioned in guidebooks. Go Tuesday or Wednesday morning when tour groups are absent.
🏛️The ruins of ancient Serdica (Roman Sofia) are visible directly underfoot in the Serdika metro station and the pedestrian underpass between the Presidency and the Largo — free to view through glass panels, but the full walking tour of exposed ruins between the Sofia Hotel Balkan and the Halite market is a 20-minute circuit that most visitors walk over without realising.
⛷️Vitosha mountain starts at the city's southern tram terminus — take tram 9 to Hladilnika and walk into Vitoshan National Park from there. The Zlatni Mostove 'stone river' (a natural geological formation of huge boulders) is a 3-hour return hike from the lower cable car station. No guide needed, well-marked trails.
🛁The mineral hot spring public baths on Banski Square (now the Sofia History Museum building) fed public baths for centuries — today the free mineral fountains on the north side of the building still flow at 37°C and locals queue each morning with plastic bottles. Join them at 8am for the most local Sofia experience available.
🍷Bulgarian wine is consistently underestimated — Mavrud and Melnik grapes produce powerful reds that rarely leave the country. The wine bar Raketa Rakia Bar on Graf Ignatiev stocks the best selection of local wines and rakia (fruit brandy) in the city, and the staff will guide you through a tasting flight for under €15.
