✈️ Getting there

BGOBergen Airport, Flesland
📍 17 km45 min🚌 Light Rail (Bybanen)🚌 Bus🚕 Taxi

The Bybanen light rail (Line 1) runs directly from the airport to the city centre (Bergen Storsenter stop) in 45 minutes for around NOK 42 — buy a ticket at the yellow machines before boarding, as inspectors are frequent and on-board fines are steep.

Bergen's main international airport is a modern mid-sized hub handling Norwegian, SAS, Widerøe and low-cost carriers including Ryanair and easyJet — efficient, well-signed, and rarely chaotic outside summer peaks.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Bergen — beyond the tourist trail.

🚡Take the Fløibanen funicular (runs until 23:00 in summer, 16 minutes up) to the top of Mount Fløyen — but instead of the summit café, walk 15 minutes northeast along the ridge to the small lake Skomakerdiket for a completely crowd-free view of the fjord. Sunrise or the golden hour before sunset are extraordinary.
🐟Buy a shrimp baguette from one of the fishmongers at Fisketorget (the Fish Market) and eat it on the harbour wall — this is what Bergen residents actually do for lunch. Avoid the sit-down tourist traps at the market; go to the stalls at the back, ask for 'rekesmørbrød', and pay around NOK 100.
🏠Book the guided tour inside the Bryggen UNESCO wharf buildings (run by the Hanseatic Museum, currently in the Schøtstuene assembly rooms during renovation) — you access hidden backrooms, sleeping lofts, and 600-year-old storage passages that day-trippers walking the front lane never see.
🎻Bergen is Grieg's city — visit Troldhaugen (his villa, 10km south of centre, bus 60 from the bus station) on a day when a chamber concert is scheduled. They run 1-hour recitals in the intimate 200-seat salon from May to October and the programme features music Grieg composed in that actual room.
⛴️Take local bus 990 or the commuter boat to Lysøen island to see Ole Bull's extraordinary Moorish-Norwegian fantasy villa — almost nobody from outside Scandinavia knows it exists. The island has forest trails and a small beach. Open May to September, a 40-minute journey from Bergen.
