Explore Diocletian's Palace at dawn (5:30–7 am in summer) before the tour groups arrive — the warren of subterranean cellars (€10) is extraordinary in early light and the Peristyle square, usually packed, is empty and eerie. The palace is not a ruin; people live and work inside it.
Take the first catamaran of the day to Hvar town (1.5 hours, ~€15 one-way, book Jadrolinija ferry online) and hire a scooter (€35/day) to reach Milna and Dubovica beaches on the south side — local beaches, clearer water, and no sunbeds.
Walk 30 minutes northwest of the ferry terminal along the Bačvice promenade to the Kaštelet cove — smaller beach, fewer tourists, and you can watch locals play picigin, a uniquely Dalmatian ball game played in shallow water.
Buy Plavac Mali wine directly from the market stalls at Pazar (the open-air market just east of the Golden Gate) on Saturday morning — local producers bring wine, olive oil, and prosciutto directly. You'll pay a quarter of restaurant prices.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Diocletian's Palace at dawn
Check in and immediately go to the palace before breakfast — the Peristyle square and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius (built inside Diocletian's mausoleum) are best without crowds. Climb the cathedral tower (€5) for rooftop views over the old town.
Subterranean cellars (Vestibule)
Buy the cellars ticket (€10) and spend an hour in the underground chambers that once supported the palace floor — now used for markets and exhibitions. The acoustics in the main hall are remarkable.
Riva promenade at sunset
Walk the palm-lined Riva waterfront as the sun hits the Adriatic — café terraces fill up, ferries come and go, and the contrast between the Roman walls behind you and the open sea ahead is quintessential Split.
Konoba Matejuška
Just west of the Riva near the small fishing harbour — simple grilled fish and seafood risotto, excellent local wine, honest prices. The grilled sea bass with olive oil and lemon is the dish to order.
Day 2
Pazar morning market
The open-air market east of the Golden Gate opens at 7 am — figs, tomatoes, local cheese, lavender oil, and Plavac Mali wine from local producers. Buy breakfast and a bottle of wine cheaper than anywhere else in town.
Day trip to Hvar
Take the 9 am catamaran to Hvar town (€15, book on Jadrolinija app). Walk up to the Spanish Fortress (Fortica) for views, then hire a water taxi to Pakleni Islands (€5–8) for swimming in clear turquoise bays.
Hvar town Stari Grad
Before the return boat, walk to Stari Grad (ancient town on the north of Hvar island) if time allows — or simply enjoy the main square and the remarkably good ice cream at the shops near the loggia.
Dalmatino, Hvar town
Black-risotto with cuttlefish ink is the Dalmatian signature dish — Dalmatino does the best version on the island. Hidden in the old town alleys, small and very popular, book ahead or arrive before 7 pm.
Day 3
Marjan Hill walk
Take bus line 12 to Marjan and hike the summit trail (45 minutes up, well-marked). The view from the top encompasses the old town, the harbour, the islands, and the Mosor mountains — the best free viewpoint in Split.
Bačvice beach and picigin
Walk down to Bačvice (15 minutes from the old town) and watch locals play picigin — a shallow-water acrobatic ball game that's uniquely Dalmatian and surprisingly hypnotic. The beach café does excellent cold Karlovačko beer.
Golden Gate and Meštrović Gallery
Walk through the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea) — the best preserved of the palace's four gates — and continue 15 minutes to the Ivan Meštrović Gallery, housed in the sculptor's personal villa with his life's work. One of Croatia's finest art museums, €10.
Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar
Natural and orange wines from small Croatian producers alongside excellent small plates — the Dalmatian prosciutto board and the octopus carpaccio are the picks. Relaxed, local atmosphere inside the palace walls.
