Helsinki is a clean-lined Nordic capital where Alvar Aalto modernism meets Russian-influenced 19th-century grandeur, all set on a Baltic archipelago. The food scene has matured fast around the Old and Hietalahti market halls, and ferries to nearby islands like Suomenlinna make it feel larger than its compact center suggests.

Don't miss
Take a public sauna session at Löyly (Hernesaarenkatu 4) or Allas Sea Pool — both are on the waterfront, open to all, and include a cold-water dip into the Baltic. Löyly is the more architecturally striking; Allas is livelier. Book Löyly ahead online.
Take the 15-minute ferry to Suomenlinna sea fortress (€5.50 return, same ticket as the city tram) — walk the full ramparts circuit, visit the submarine museum, and bring a picnic. Go on a weekday and you'll often have the outer bastions to yourself.
Join the locals at the Hakaniemi Market Hall (Hakaniemen kauppahalli) for coffee and a korvapuusti (Finnish cinnamon roll) — it's less tourist-facing than the Old Market Hall and the pastry quality is exceptional. Open weekday mornings.
Visit the Design Museum (Korkeavuorenkatu 23) on a quiet Tuesday morning — the permanent collection of 125,000 Finnish design objects traces how a small country became a global design powerhouse. The temporary exhibitions are consistently excellent.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Senate Square & Cathedral
Start at the neoclassical heart of Helsinki — Helsinki Cathedral dominates the square and the steps are a popular gathering spot. Walk down to the waterfront and the Esplanade park, which connects the South Harbour to the city centre.
Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli)
The 1889 market hall on the South Harbour is the most beautiful food market in Finland — small producers selling smoked fish, reindeer products, Finnish pastries, and cured meats. Great for lunch and food souvenirs.
Suomenlinna Ferry
Take the HSL ferry from the Market Square to Suomenlinna (15 minutes) in the afternoon — walk the ramparts, visit the Ehrensvärd Museum, and take in the archipelago views. Last ferry back is around 2am in summer.
Ravintola Sea Horse
A Helsinki institution since 1934 on Kapteeninkatu — old-school Finnish comfort food (fried Baltic herring, meatballs with lingonberry) in a wood-panelled room. Unpretentious and wonderful.
Day 2
Temppeliaukio Church
The extraordinary rock church hewn directly into a granite hill in Töölö — the copper ceiling, natural light, and incredible acoustics make it unlike any church you've visited. Arrive early; it's popular and has limited capacity.
Design District Walk
Helsinki's Design District covers about 25 blocks in Punavuori and Kaartinkaupunki — over 200 design studios, galleries, and boutiques. Grab a free map at the Design Museum and wander the streets between Iso Roobertinkatu and Uudenmaankatu.
Löyly Sauna
Book an evening session at Löyly on the Hernesaari waterfront — the award-winning wooden structure has three saunas and a direct sea-swimming platform. Alternating between 80°C heat and the Baltic is the quintessential Helsinki experience.
Löyly Restaurant
The restaurant attached to the sauna is excellent in its own right — Nordic sharing plates, good natural wines, and a waterfront terrace. Reserve a table with your sauna slot.
Day 3
Hakaniemi Market Hall (Breakfast)
Cross the Hakaniemi bridge (5 minutes from the city centre) for the best cinnamon roll in Helsinki and strong Finnish coffee — this is where locals shop, not tourists.
National Museum of Finland
The National Museum on Mannerheimintie covers Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present in a beautiful National Romantic building (1916) — the medieval and prehistory halls are the highlights. Free entry for under-18s.
Esplanade Park & Departure
A final walk along the Esplanade — Helsinki's elegant tree-lined central boulevard — before heading to Central Station for the airport train. Pick up a bag of Fazer Blue chocolate from any supermarket as the ideal Finnish souvenir.
Café Ekberg
Helsinki's oldest café (since 1852) on Bulevardi — the pastries are exceptional and the interior is unchanged since the mid-20th century. Perfect for a leisurely final breakfast or lunch.
