Don't miss
Rotunda of Galerius: arrive just after opening at 8am when it's empty — the 4th-century mosaics glow in the morning light and you'll have the space to yourself before tour groups arrive around 10am.
Modiano Market (Agora Modiano): go on a weekday morning and head straight to the butchers' and fishmongers' inner hall — the prepared food stalls at the back serve grilled offal and fish soup that locals eat standing up for under €5.
Ano Poli at golden hour: walk up through the Upper Town's cobbled lanes to the Byzantine walls for a panorama over the gulf — the neighbourhood is largely touristed, but the northeastern corner near Eptapyrgio fortress stays quiet and authentic.
Trigona Elenidis in Panorama: make the 20-minute taxi ride to this hilltop suburb for the city's most famous bougatsa and trigona pastries, stuffed with cream so fresh they collapse if you wait too long to eat them.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
White Tower & Waterfront
Start at the iconic White Tower (€4 entry) in the morning — the rooftop gives the best orientation of the city. Walk the seafront promenade west toward the port, stopping at the statue of Alexander the Great.
Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
Spend two hours here — the Macedonian gold burial finds are among the finest in Greece and totally underrated. Arrive before noon when school groups clear out.
Aristotelous Square & Ladadika
Walk through the grand central square, then continue to Ladadika for an early evening wander through the old warehouse district as the bars begin to fill up.
To Elliniko
A straightforward but excellent taverna near Ladadika — order the grilled octopus and the daily bean soup. No reservations needed if you arrive by 7:30pm.
Day 2
Modiano & Kapani Markets
Spend the morning in the two central markets — Modiano is covered and atmospheric, Kapani spills outside with vegetables, spices and cheap ready-to-eat food. Best before 11am when stock is freshest.
Rotunda & Arch of Galerius
The 4th-century Roman rotunda is just a 10-minute walk from the market. The nearby Arch of Galerius (Kamara) is the meeting point of the entire city — grab a coffee at one of the surrounding cafes to watch Thessaloniki's social life unfold.
Ano Poli (Upper Town)
Walk uphill to the old Byzantine upper town — the streets are steep but rewarding. The Eptapyrgio fortress at the top is free to walk around and gives views over the city and gulf.
Ouzeri Tsinari
Deep in Ano Poli, this is a genuine neighbourhood ouzeri where mezedes keep arriving until you say stop. Order the taramosalata and saganaki, and drink ouzo properly — ice and water on the side.
Day 3
Museum of Byzantine Culture
One of Europe's best Byzantine collections in an elegant modern building — the textile and icon rooms are extraordinary. Allow 90 minutes minimum. Opens at 8am.
Thessaloniki Sunday Market (Bazaar)
If your visit lands on a Sunday, the sprawling flea market near the train station is unmissable — antiques, clothes, tools, and every kind of Greek kitsch spread across multiple city blocks.
Sunset at the Sea Gardens
The Nea Paralia (New Waterfront) park stretches 3km east of the White Tower — rent a bike from one of the stands near the tower and ride east at dusk for a classic Thessaloniki evening.
Extravaganza
A beloved institution for bougatsa — Thessaloniki's signature custard-filled pastry. This is the place locals send guests for the definitive version, open early for breakfast.
