Rhodes pairs a remarkably intact medieval Old Town — a UNESCO-listed walled city built by the Knights of St John — with long Aegean beaches and the clifftop Acropolis of Lindos. It's larger and greener than most Greek islands, with enough Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and Italian colonial buildings to fill several days.

Don't miss
Walk the walls of the Old Town at dusk — the 4km circuit along the ramparts is free to walk from the Palace of the Grand Masters and offers rooftop-level views over both the medieval city and the harbour. Most tourists skip it entirely.
Take the 40-minute drive up to Tsambika Monastery: the panoramic view over the east coast bay is Rhodes' best-kept photo spot, and the climb (280 steps) thins the crowds to almost nothing before 9am.
Eat at the fish tavernas in Kamiros Skala — a tiny working harbour on the west coast completely ignored by tourist itineraries. Order the grilled octopus and whatever fish the boats brought in that morning.
Skip the overpriced restaurants on the Street of the Knights and head to the Agora market square in the New Town for the same mezze plates at half the price, eaten alongside locals rather than tour groups.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Palace of the Grand Masters
Start early (opens 8am) to beat tour groups — the mosaic floors and Knights' armoury are genuinely impressive and uncrowded before 10am. Budget 90 minutes.
Old Town labyrinth exploration
Get deliberately lost in the backstreets south of the Street of the Knights — the cobbled Ippoton area and the old Jewish quarter around Plateia Evraion Martyron are quiet, photogenic, and free.
Mandraki Harbour sunset
Walk north to Mandraki Harbour at golden hour to photograph the bronze deer statues where the Colossus allegedly stood, and watch the fishing boats return. The fort of St Nicholas at the harbour mouth is also open until 8pm.
Meltemi
Right on the waterfront in the Old Town; reliable mezze, cold Mythos, and tables that face the sea — arrive at 7pm before the wait builds.
Day 2
Acropolis of Lindos
Arrive at Lindos village before 9am and walk up to the clifftop acropolis before the tour buses arrive — the combination of ancient columns and the view down over the circular bay is one of Greece's great sights.
Lindos village whitewash streets
The village below the acropolis is a tangle of captains' mansions with painted pebble courtyards — most are open as cafes or shops. Best explored after the acropolis, when tour groups have left.
Anthony Quinn Bay swim
30-minute drive north from Lindos on the east coast: crystal-clear turquoise water in a sheltered bay. The small rocky cove just before the main bay has the same water quality with far fewer people.
Mavrikos
Lindos institution run by the same family since 1933 — the sea urchin salad and fresh fish are worth the splurge; book ahead in peak season.
Day 3
Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes)
A forested gorge inland where Jersey tiger moths carpet the trees in summer (July–August peak). Free to walk through, eerily quiet, and a genuine contrast to the beach-and-ruins circuit.
Ancient Kamiros ruins
One of the three ancient cities of Rhodes, set on a hillside above the west coast with sea views and very few visitors — easier to appreciate as a whole than Lindos because crowds are thin.
Kamiros Skala fish lunch
Drive down to this tiny working harbour and pick any of the three waterfront tavernas for whatever is fresh — grilled octopus dried on the line outside is the signature dish.
Taverna Reni
Kamiros Skala harbourfront — no frills, plastic chairs, exceptional grilled fish priced by the kilo.
Travel tips
- →Walk the Old Town after 9pm when day-trippers leave and the cobblestones cool down
- →Drive south to Prasonisi for empty beaches — the north coast is windy and crowded
- →Climb to Lindos Acropolis early; there's almost no shade on the path
