Lima is South America's gastronomic capital, where world-ranked restaurants in Miraflores and Barranco serve ceviche, tiraditos and Nikkei fusion against a backdrop of Pacific cliffs. Beyond the food scene, the colonial centre's catacombs, the Larco Museum's pre-Columbian collections and the bohemian street art of Barranco give the city real depth.

Don't miss

🍋

Eat ceviche before noon at Mercado de Surquillo (Mercado No. 1) — locals consider afternoon ceviche a red flag. Go straight to the fish stalls at the back for raw ceviche mixto under S/20.

🌅

Walk the Malecón de Miraflores at dusk — the clifftop boardwalk has paragliders launching off the edge into the Pacific haze. The best views are from Parque del Amor looking south toward Barranco.

🎨

Spend a morning in Barranco, Lima's bohemian quarter. The MATE museum (Mario Testino's photography foundation) is tiny but exceptional. Arrive when it opens at 10am to beat tour groups.

🍽️

Book a lunch (not dinner) at Central or Maido — both are in the World's 50 Best and lunch menus run S/300-500 vs S/800+ at dinner. Reserve 4-6 weeks ahead online; cancellations appear Friday mornings.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Miraflores Malecón & Larcomar

Start at Parque Kennedy in the heart of Miraflores, walk west to the clifftop Malecón. The Larcomar shopping complex is built into the cliff itself — the ocean views from its terraces are free and spectacular.

Museo Larco

Uber 15 minutes to Pueblo Libre for Peru's finest pre-Columbian collection. The garden café inside the museum is a lovely spot for a late-afternoon coffee among jasmine and huacas.

Barranco evening stroll

Head to Barranco for sunset drinks. The Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) is touristy but genuinely pretty at dusk. The streets around Plaza Municipal are lined with bars.

🍽️

La Mar Cebichería

Gastón Acurio's beloved cevichería in Miraflores — queue at 12:30 for lunch or book ahead. The leche de tigre cocktail is mandatory.

2

Day 2

Mercado de Surquillo

Arrive by 9am to watch the market come alive. Buy fresh lucuma, cherimoya and aji amarillo to understand Peruvian flavour from the source. Stall 142 does the best empanadas.

Historic Centre & Plaza Mayor

The colonial centre is 20 minutes by Uber. The Catedral de Lima and the Monastery of San Francisco (with its catacombs) are both worth entry fees. Go before 11am to beat tour groups.

MATE – Museo Mario Testino

Back in Barranco, this intimate photography museum in a colonial house showcases Testino's fashion work alongside Peruvian portraiture. Small, beautifully curated, takes about 90 minutes.

🍽️

Isolina Taberna Peruana

Old-school Lima home cooking in Barranco — massive chicharrón sandwiches, tallarín saltado, and the best arroz con leche in the city. Booking essential for lunch.

3

Day 3

Huaca Pucllana

An ancient adobe pyramid sitting in the middle of Miraflores, lit dramatically at night. Morning visits (from 9am) mean smaller crowds and better light for photos. The on-site restaurant has views directly onto the ruins.

Surfers at Playa Makaha

Lima has a surf culture few visitors see. Watch or join the early-morning surfers at Playa Makaha in Miraflores or the longer breaks at La Herradura in Chorrillos. Board rentals available on the beach.

Nikkei farewell lunch

Book lunch at Maido (nikkei — Japanese-Peruvian fusion) or Osaka in Miraflores for a farewell feast. Both require advance reservation and represent the peak of Lima's culinary innovation.

🍽️

Maido

Consistently one of the world's best restaurants — Mitsuharu Tsumura's nikkei tasting menu at lunch is extraordinary value versus dinner. Book weeks ahead at maido.pe.
