Lima is South America's gastronomic capital, where world-ranked restaurants in Miraflores and Barranco serve ceviche, tiraditos and Nikkei fusion against a backdrop of Pacific cliffs. Beyond the food scene, the colonial centre's catacombs, the Larco Museum's pre-Columbian collections and the bohemian street art of Barranco give the city real depth.

Don't miss
Eat ceviche before noon at Mercado de Surquillo (Mercado No. 1) — locals consider afternoon ceviche a red flag. Go straight to the fish stalls at the back for raw ceviche mixto under S/20.
Walk the Malecón de Miraflores at dusk — the clifftop boardwalk has paragliders launching off the edge into the Pacific haze. The best views are from Parque del Amor looking south toward Barranco.
Spend a morning in Barranco, Lima's bohemian quarter. The MATE museum (Mario Testino's photography foundation) is tiny but exceptional. Arrive when it opens at 10am to beat tour groups.
Book a lunch (not dinner) at Central or Maido — both are in the World's 50 Best and lunch menus run S/300-500 vs S/800+ at dinner. Reserve 4-6 weeks ahead online; cancellations appear Friday mornings.
Travel tips
- →Book Central, Maido or Kjolle weeks ahead — top tables vanish fast
- →Stay in Miraflores or Barranco rather than the historic centre for safety and walkability
- →Use the official airport taxi (Taxi Green) or pre-booked transfers, not street pickups
