Don't miss

🕌

Humayun's Tomb at 7 am — the UNESCO World Heritage site that inspired the Taj Mahal is almost empty at opening and the morning light on the red sandstone is extraordinary. Hire the government-certified guide (₹200) at the entrance for genuine historical context rather than the hawker version.

🍛

Karim's in Old Delhi's Gali Kababian — open since 1913, this is the most direct link to Mughal court cooking in the city. Order the mutton burra (marinated overnight, grilled over charcoal) and the dal Karim, which has been simmering for decades. Go for lunch when it's slightly less hectic.

🚶

Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk on foot before 9 am — the wholesale spice market at Khari Baoli (the largest in Asia) opens at dawn and is navigable before the motorised chaos begins. Follow the kite-makers' lane (Lal Kuan Bazaar) north for craftspeople who supply the entire country.

🏛️

The National Museum's Harappan Gallery — the ground floor holds one of the world's finest collections of Indus Valley Civilisation objects, including the Dancing Girl bronze, and is completely uncrowded compared to the Mughal floors above. Free on Fridays.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Qutb Minar Complex

The 73-metre minaret built in 1193 is Delhi's oldest and arguably most impressive monument — arrive at 9 am before the heat builds. The adjacent Iron Pillar (1,600 years old, rust-free) and ruined mosque courtyard deserve at least 90 minutes.

Mehrauli Village

Walk 10 minutes north from Qutb into the village — an inhabited medieval settlement full of Mughal-era tombs, Sufi dargahs, and crumbling haveli mansions. The Dargah of Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki is active and atmospheric; visitors of any faith are welcome.

Hauz Khas Village

The medieval reservoir and madrasa ruins of Hauz Khas now back onto one of Delhi's most eclectic café and boutique districts. Visit the ruins (free, often empty) then walk into the village lanes for craft shops and rooftop cafés overlooking the lake.

🍽️

Indian Accent

Consistently ranked India's best restaurant — chef Manish Mehrotra's modern Indian tasting menu uses exceptional ingredients and technique without losing cultural coherence. Book 3–4 weeks ahead; the bar-side lunch menu is more accessible and a fraction of the dinner price.

2

Day 2

Old Delhi: Jama Masjid & Chandni Chowk

Climb the southern minaret of the Jama Masjid (₹300 for non-Muslims, guides included) for the best aerial view of Old Delhi's chaos. Then walk west through Chandni Chowk's silver-jewellery lane, past the Sikh Gurudwara Sis Ganj, and into the wholesale kite market.

Red Fort

Shah Jahan's 17th-century fortress is a 30-minute walk east along Netaji Subhash Marg — the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) and the Rang Mahal women's quarters are the highlights. Go to the Sound & Light Show at dusk (₹80) for a vivid historical overview.

Humayun's Tomb at Sunset

The second-most important Mughal monument in India and significantly quieter than the Taj — the sunset light turns the red sandstone deep amber and the symmetrical Persian-style garden (charbagh) is perfect for a long slow walk.

🍽️

Karim's (Old Delhi)

The 1913 original near Jama Masjid — mughlai cooking in its purest Delhi form. Mutton nihari (slow-cooked shank stew) and seekh kebabs grilled over coal; eat in the ancient tiled dining room rather than the modern extension. Cash only.

3

Day 3

Lodhi Garden Morning Walk

The park opens at 5 am and is at its most Delhiite at 7 am — power walkers, yoga groups, and families of grey langur monkeys all sharing the space around 15th-century tombs. The Bara Gumbad dome is usually unlocked by a gardener if you ask.

National Museum Highlights

Spend 2 hours on the ground floor's Harappan, sculpture, and Buddhist art galleries — the Sanchi stupa railings reconstructed in Gallery 6 are world-class. Book the excellent ₹150 audio guide at the entrance.

Connaught Place & Khan Market

Edwin Lutyens' circular arcade at the heart of New Delhi is beautiful and surprisingly functional — good bookshops, the original Wenger's bakery (since 1926), and the underground Palika Bazaar for cheap textiles. Khan Market nearby has Delhi's best selection of Indian literature in English.

🍽️

Saravana Bhavan (Connaught Place)

The global South Indian vegetarian chain's Delhi outpost — the masala dosa, filter coffee, and unlimited thali are the benchmarks. Reliably clean, very cheap (meal under ₹250), and a genuine counterpoint to all the Mughal meat cooking.
