✈️ Getting there

DELIndira Gandhi International Airport
📍 16 km25 min🚌 Delhi Metro (Airport Express)🚌 Pre-paid Taxi🚌 Uber/Ola🚌 Bus

The Airport Express metro line runs from Terminal 3 directly to New Delhi Railway Station in 19 minutes for ₹60 (~€0.65) — trains run every 10–15 minutes from 4:45 am to 11:30 pm; for south Delhi hotels (Hauz Khas, Lodhi) an Uber or Ola is often faster and costs ₹300–500 (~€3–6).

IGI Terminal 3 is a vast, modern hub built in 2010 and one of South Asia's busiest airports — IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara dominate domestic routes, while long-haul European carriers including Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, and Emirates connect it to dozens of European cities.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in New Delhi — beyond the tourist trail.

🕌Humayun's Tomb at 7 am — the UNESCO World Heritage site that inspired the Taj Mahal is almost empty at opening and the morning light on the red sandstone is extraordinary. Hire the government-certified guide (₹200) at the entrance for genuine historical context rather than the hawker version.
🍛Karim's in Old Delhi's Gali Kababian — open since 1913, this is the most direct link to Mughal court cooking in the city. Order the mutton burra (marinated overnight, grilled over charcoal) and the dal Karim, which has been simmering for decades. Go for lunch when it's slightly less hectic.
🚶Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk on foot before 9 am — the wholesale spice market at Khari Baoli (the largest in Asia) opens at dawn and is navigable before the motorised chaos begins. Follow the kite-makers' lane (Lal Kuan Bazaar) north for craftspeople who supply the entire country.
🏛️The National Museum's Harappan Gallery — the ground floor holds one of the world's finest collections of Indus Valley Civilisation objects, including the Dancing Girl bronze, and is completely uncrowded compared to the Mughal floors above. Free on Fridays.
🌿Lodi Garden at sunset — the sunken tombs of the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties sit in a landscaped park where Delhi's professional class walks dogs and practises yoga. The Sheesh Gumbad tomb is unlocked by a caretaker and you can walk inside for free with a small tip.
