Cape Town is staggeringly scenic, with Table Mountain looming over a city wedged between Atlantic beaches and Cape Winelands. Beyond the postcard views, it offers world-class dining, a complex apartheid history at Robben Island and District Six, and easy access to penguins at Boulders Beach and whales along the False Bay coast.

Don't miss

🏔️

Hike Lion's Head at sunrise on a full-moon morning — the circular trail takes about 2 hours, chains help with the scramble at the top, and you'll beat the cable car crowds entirely. Go on a weekday for fewer people.

🍷

Drive the Franschhoek Wine Tram on a Tuesday or Wednesday (weekends get busy) — a hop-on, hop-off tram linking boutique estates. Moreson and Babylonstoren are highlights; book lunch at the latter's garden restaurant weeks in advance.

🐧

Visit Boulders Beach penguin colony in Simon's Town in the morning before 9am when the penguins are most active and tour groups haven't arrived. Pay the SANParks entry fee (around R240) — the main boardwalk gets you eye-level with hundreds of African penguins.

🥘

Eat a bunny chow or Cape Malay curry at a locals' spot in the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood — the colourful hillside quarter is best explored before 10am before it gets busy. Try Biesmiellah restaurant on Wale Street, open since 1973, for authentic Cape Malay cooking.
