Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the staging point for the Andaman Sea, with limestone karsts in Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands an easy boat ride away. The west coast beaches range from Patong's full-throttle nightlife to quieter stretches at Kata Noi and Nai Harn, and Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses are a welcome break from the resorts.

Don't miss
Catch the sunrise from Promthep Cape on the southern tip — arrive by 05:30 before the tour vans come and you will have the viewpoint almost to yourself. The silhouette of Chalong Bay at first light is extraordinary.
Hire a private long-tail from Ao Po Pier to James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) — the 2-hour route costs around ฿2500 for the whole boat and avoids the crowded speedboat tours entirely.
Eat Hokkien noodles at Raya Restaurant in Phuket Town — a 100-year-old Peranakan house, the crab curry is made from a recipe unchanged since the 1950s. Book for lunch; they often run out by 13:30.
Dive or snorkel at Similan Islands (October–May only) — book the 2-day liveaboard from Khao Lak rather than Phuket; it is cheaper and you get earlier access before the day trippers arrive.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Phuket Town Sino-Portuguese walking tour
Start at the colourful Shrine of Serene Light (Jui Tui Shrine) on Ranong Road, then walk south through Thalang and Dibuk Roads. The painted houses and tile-fronted shopfronts are in best condition early morning.
Weekend Market (if Saturday/Sunday)
Lard Yai Walking Street on Thalang Road on Sunday evenings — street food, vintage stalls, and live music. The mango sticky rice and oyster omelette stalls near the old clock tower are unmissable.
Big Buddha at sunset
The 45-metre white marble Buddha on Nakkerd Hill is visible from half the island. Come at 17:30 for the golden light and 360-degree views. Entry is free; dress modestly.
Raya Restaurant, Phuket Town
Peranakan-Thai cooking in a century-old wooden house — the muu hong (braised pork belly) and crab curry are the definitive dishes. Lunch only; arrive by 11:30 to guarantee a table.
Day 2
Phang Nga Bay long-tail boat
Hire a private long-tail from Ao Po Grand Marina for a half-day through the mangroves and limestone karsts. Ask the driver to take you to Hong Island lagoon — only accessible by swimming through a cave at low tide.
James Bond Island stop
Ko Tapu (the spike-shaped rock from The Man with the Golden Gun) is busy by 10:00 — being there at 08:30 with a private boat means you get the shot without the crowds.
Koh Yao Noi lunch detour
Stop on this quiet Muslim fishing island for a late lunch at a waterfront restaurant — grilled fish, coconut rice, and a pace of life that feels nothing like Phuket.
Chomchan, Phuket Town
Modern Southern Thai cooking from a young chef — coconut-based curries and local seafood. Small space, only 10 tables; book ahead or eat early at 18:00.
Day 3
Promthep Cape sunrise
Set an alarm — 05:15 for the drive up. The cape faces south-east and catches first light over Chalong Bay. A handful of vendors are already set up selling coffee from flasks.
Nai Harn Beach morning swim
Directly below Promthep, Nai Harn is one of Phuket's best beaches — wide, clean, and still used by locals for early morning exercise. Calm water from November to April.
Chalong Temple (Wat Chalong)
Phuket's most important Buddhist temple, and active — not a tourist stage set. Come before 09:00 when monks are in residence. The three-storey pagoda contains a relic of the Buddha.
Baan Rim Pa, Kalim Bay
Dramatic clifftop setting above Kamala Beach, Thai Royal cuisine — the signature red curry duck is exceptional. Book for 19:00 for the sunset view from the terrace.
Travel tips
- →Avoid May–October — that's monsoon season and many beaches fly red flags
- →Skip the day-tour Phi Phi boats; stay overnight on Koh Lanta or Koh Yao Noi instead
- →Use Grab or Bolt — the local taxi mafia charges several times the metered fare
