Cape Town is staggeringly scenic, with Table Mountain looming over a city wedged between Atlantic beaches and Cape Winelands. Beyond the postcard views, it offers world-class dining, a complex apartheid history at Robben Island and District Six, and easy access to penguins at Boulders Beach and whales along the False Bay coast.

Don't miss
Hike Lion's Head at sunrise on a full-moon morning — the circular trail takes about 2 hours, chains help with the scramble at the top, and you'll beat the cable car crowds entirely. Go on a weekday for fewer people.
Drive the Franschhoek Wine Tram on a Tuesday or Wednesday (weekends get busy) — a hop-on, hop-off tram linking boutique estates. Moreson and Babylonstoren are highlights; book lunch at the latter's garden restaurant weeks in advance.
Visit Boulders Beach penguin colony in Simon's Town in the morning before 9am when the penguins are most active and tour groups haven't arrived. Pay the SANParks entry fee (around R240) — the main boardwalk gets you eye-level with hundreds of African penguins.
Eat a bunny chow or Cape Malay curry at a locals' spot in the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood — the colourful hillside quarter is best explored before 10am before it gets busy. Try Biesmiellah restaurant on Wale Street, open since 1973, for authentic Cape Malay cooking.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Table Mountain Cable Car
Book the first morning cable car slot online (opens 8am, sells out fast in summer). Spend 90 minutes on top walking the circular path — on a clear day you can see the full Cape Peninsula. Download the trail map beforehand.
Bo-Kaap & City Bowl
Walk down through the cobblestoned, vividly painted streets of Bo-Kaap — best before noon when tour groups thin out. Pick up spices at the local shops and walk the short distance to the Old Biscuit Mill neighbourhood.
V&A Waterfront at Sunset
Head to the Waterfront for the golden hour — the view of Table Mountain from the harbour is the classic Cape Town shot. Grab a drink at Harbour House overlooking the working fishing harbour.
Biesmiellah
A Cape Malay institution in Bo-Kaap since 1973. The lamb curry and samoosas are the draw. BYO wine, cash preferred, no frills — get there for an early dinner at 6pm before the queues build.
Day 2
Chapman's Peak Drive
Drive the 9km coastal road from Hout Bay to Noordhoek — one of the world's great scenic drives. Stop at the viewpoints halfway for unobstructed Atlantic views. The toll costs around R60 each way.
Boulders Beach Penguin Colony
Head south through Simon's Town to the SANParks penguin colony. Arrive before 9:30am, pay the entry fee, and walk the boardwalk through the nesting birds. Budget 90 minutes here.
Clifton 4th Beach
End the afternoon at Clifton 4th Beach — the most sheltered of Cape Town's Atlantic-side beaches. Pack a picnic (no restaurants onsite), bring cash for the sun lounger rental (R80), and expect cold but crystal-clear water.
Harbour House Kalk Bay
Perched above the Kalk Bay working fishing harbour, with the ocean practically underneath the glass floor. Order the calamari and catch of the day. Book a window table online — it books out weeks ahead on weekends.
Day 3
Constantia Wine Estates
The Constantia Valley is 20 minutes from the city centre and home to South Africa's oldest wine farms. Klein Constantia and Groot Constantia are the picks — the latter has a museum. Go in the morning, most tasting rooms open at 9am.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
Adjacent to Constantia, Kirstenbosch is built into the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Walk the Boomslang canopy walkway (book ahead) for a tree-level view through the forest canopy. Allow 2–3 hours.
Lion's Head Evening Hike
If energy allows, the 2-hour circular Lion's Head trail is stunning in the late afternoon light. Wear proper shoes, bring a headlamp just in case, and don't rush the chain sections near the summit.
La Colombe
Consistently one of Africa's best restaurants, hidden in the Constantia forest. The multi-course tasting menu uses local ingredients with French technique. Book weeks — or months — ahead. The tuna tins amuse-bouche is legendary.
Travel tips
- →Book Table Mountain cable car tickets online and go first thing — wind closures are common by afternoon
- →Hire a car for at least a couple of days to reach Cape Point, Stellenbosch, and Hermanus
- →Stick to Uber or Bolt after dark rather than walking between neighbourhoods
