✈️ Getting there

VTEWattay International Airport
📍 3 km15 min🚕 Taxi🚌 Tuk-tuk🚌 Loca app

Wattay is just 3km from the centre — a fixed-price taxi from the airport counter costs around $7–10 USD and takes 10–15 minutes; tuk-tuks are cheaper at around $3–5 if you negotiate outside the terminal.

Wattay is a small, simple regional airport with a compact single terminal serving Lao Airlines, Thai Airways, AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines and a handful of Chinese carriers — arrivals and departures are straightforward and rarely busy.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Vientiane — beyond the tourist trail.

🌅Pha That Luang at golden hour — arrive at 4:30pm and walk the outer cloister first before the light hits the 45-metre gilded stupa from the west. This is Laos's most sacred monument and looks extraordinary in late afternoon. The surrounding park is peaceful and largely tourist-free on weekdays.
🍺Mekong sunset from Chao Anuvong Park — the riverfront promenade faces directly west towards Thailand. Plant yourself on the grass by 5:30pm, buy a Beerlao from a street vendor, and watch the sky turn orange over the far bank. The night market opens right behind you as darkness falls.
🏛️COPE Visitor Centre — a moving, well-curated free museum about the UXO (unexploded ordnance) crisis left by the secret US bombing campaign (1964–73). More bombs were dropped on Laos per capita than on any country in history. Allow 90 minutes and visit before the other temples — it changes how you see the whole country.
🛕Wat Si Saket on a quiet weekday morning — this is the only temple that survived the Siamese destruction of Vientiane in 1828, and its thousands of tiny Buddha niches in the cloister walls are genuinely eerie and beautiful. Arrive before 9am to avoid tour groups.
🚂Take the Laos-China Railway north for a day trip — the Vientiane station connects to Vang Vieng in under an hour for a few dollars. The train itself is modern and fast, cutting through limestone karst scenery. Book tickets the day before at the station or via the app.
