✈️ Getting there

SKPSkopje Alexander the Great Airport
📍 17 km25 min🚌 Bus🚕 Taxi

A taxi to the city centre costs around €25 (fixed rate, confirm before departure and carry cash); the Erak Transporter bus runs to the centre for 200 MKD (~€3.25) but only every 2-3 hours, so check the schedule in advance.

A modern, medium-sized airport 17km southeast of the city centre, served by Wizz Air, easyJet, Ryanair, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Austrian, Lufthansa, and Swiss — well-connected to major European cities despite North Macedonia's relatively small size.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Skopje — beyond the tourist trail.

🕌Spend at least two hours wandering the Čaršija (Old Bazaar) without a plan — enter from the Stone Bridge side, find the 15th-century Mustafa Pasha Mosque (free entry, shoes off), then lose yourself in the copper-workers' lane (Čifte Amam area) and end at the Daut Pasha Hamam, a 15th-century hammam now housing an art gallery. Morning is best, before the heat peaks.
🚡Take the Millennium Cross cable car up Mount Vodno (120 MKD, runs from 9am) for sweeping views over Skopje and the surrounding plains — on a clear day you can see all the way to the Šar mountains. The 33m cross at the summit is one of the largest in the world. Walk back down through the forest if you have the legs — the trail is well-marked and takes about 90 minutes.
🛶Take a morning bus to Matka Canyon (50 MKD, about 45 min from the main bus station) and hire a rowboat or join a guided boat trip through the narrow gorge. The turquoise Treska river, medieval monastery of Sveti Andrej clinging to the cliff face, and Vrelo Cave (one of Europe's deepest underwater caves) make this a genuinely outstanding half-day. Go on a weekday to avoid Skopje's weekend crowds.
🏛️Walk across the Stone Bridge (Kameni Most) at night — the Skopje 2014 statuary is genuinely more interesting after dark when it's all lit up and you can enjoy the absurdity of it without the afternoon heat. The view from the bridge towards the Čaršija minarets on one side and the floodlit neoclassical facades on the other captures Skopje's split personality perfectly.
🫙Visit the Čifte Amam area in the Čaršija on a weekday morning to buy genuine Macedonian ajvar (roasted red pepper relish) and local honey directly from small producers — look for sellers in the covered sections of the bazaar rather than tourist-facing shops. The difference in quality and price is significant.
