✈️ Getting there

SJJSarajevo International Airport
📍 9 km25 min🚌 Bus🚌 Trolleybus🚕 Taxi

The Centrotrans airport shuttle bus (5 BAM, roughly €2.50) runs to Baščaršija timed around flight arrivals — the cheapest and most direct option; alternatively, walk 800m to the Dobrinja district and take trolleybus 103 or 107 for 1.80 BAM.

A compact, efficient airport 9km from the city, served by 25 airlines including Ryanair, Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air, Austrian, Lufthansa, and LOT — well-connected to European hubs despite its relatively small passenger volume of around 2.2 million per year.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Sarajevo — beyond the tourist trail.

Drink Bosnian coffee the right way at Cafe Divan inside the Morića Han caravanserai in Baščaršija — a 16th-century inn with a cobbled courtyard. Bosnian coffee arrives unfiltered in a džezva with a sugar cube and a lokum (Turkish delight); the ritual is to let the grounds settle for two minutes before pouring. This is not a place to rush.
🌹Look for the Sarajevo Roses as you walk the city — the concrete scars left by mortar shells during the 1992-1996 siege, filled with red resin. They're scattered across the city's pavements, each marking a spot where civilians were killed. The one outside the Holiday Inn on Sniper Alley is particularly affecting.
🥩Eat cevapi at Cevabdžinica Željo (two branches in Baščaršija) — this is a Sarajevo institution, and the soft somun bread, generous kajmak, and well-seasoned sausages are the benchmark. Go for lunch (they open at 8am), avoid weekend evenings when queues are longest, and order at least ten pieces.
🏔️Climb to the Yellow Fortress (Žuta Tabija) at sunset — a 20-minute walk uphill from Baščaršija along Jevrejska street. The view over Sarajevo's valley, with its mix of minarets, church spires, and mountain ridgelines, is one of the great city panoramas in the Balkans. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and bring something to sit on.
🎿Take a taxi or shared ride to the abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track on Mount Trebević (around 20 BAM each way) — the graffiti-covered concrete ruin snaking through the forest is surreal, historically layered (it was a military position during the siege), and almost entirely tourist-free. Add the cable car back to the city for a full mountain afternoon.
