✈️ Getting there

UIOMariscal Sucre International Airport
📍 18 km35 min🚌 Bus🚕 Taxi🚌 Uber

The Aeropuerto Express bus (Línea Roja) runs directly to the historic centre and La Mariscal neighbourhood for USD 2 — take it if your hotel is near those areas; a taxi or Uber costs USD 15–25 depending on traffic and destination.

A modern international hub that replaced the old central-city airport in 2013; handles long-haul flights on LATAM and Iberia (direct Madrid service) as well as regional routes across South America — it's spacious, well-organised, and easy to navigate.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Quito — beyond the tourist trail.

Visit La Compañía de Jesús church between 9–10 AM when the morning sun streams through the gold-leaf interior — estimated 7 tonnes of gold covers every surface. Skip the midday visit when tour groups clog the nave. Entry is USD 4.
🌋Take the Teleférico (cable car) up Pichincha volcano on a clear weekday morning — it rises to 4,100m and on good days you can see 6 volcanoes simultaneously. Weekends are crowded; go Tuesday or Wednesday before 9 AM.
🥣Eat hornado (slow-roasted whole pig) at Mercado Central on Calle Esmeraldas — arrive by 11 AM before the best cuts sell out. A full plate with mote (hominy corn), llapingachos (potato cakes), and salad costs under €3. The market stalls on the upper floor are cleaner and calmer than the ground floor.
🌍Stand on the actual equator at the Quitsato sundial monument near Cayambe (45 minutes north by bus), not the tourist trap Mitad del Mundo site — Quitsato has been verified by GPS to be the precise equatorial line, and the sundial is a genuinely fascinating piece of archaeoastronomy.
🚌Take the 3-hour bus from the Terminal Quitumbe to Quilotoa crater lake (USD 3) and arrive before noon when the water is its most vivid turquoise-green. Walk the crater rim (2–3 hours) rather than taking horses — the panorama of the Andes from the top is one of Ecuador's defining views.
