✈️ Getting there

HAVAeropuerto Internacional José Martí
📍 18 km30 min🚕 Taxi🚌 Bus

The cheapest option is the P12 Metrobus (a few Cuban pesos), but taxis are the practical choice for most arrivals — agree a price before getting in and expect to pay around €20–25 in CUP-equivalent for the 25–35 minute ride into Vedado or Habana Vieja.

José Martí is a mid-sized Caribbean hub with a dated but functional feel — Iberia, Air Europa, Air France, and TUI all fly here from Europe, and the terminal handles long-haul traffic with the unhurried pace you'll soon come to associate with the island.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Havana — beyond the tourist trail.

🚗Book a classic-car tour through a casa particular host rather than the hotel desk — you'll pay half the price and the driver will take you to the viewpoint at the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro at golden hour, where the whole harbour glows.
🎶Go to Casa de la Música in Miramar on a Sunday afternoon (not the Habana Centro branch, which is more touristy) — locals outnumber visitors, the live timba sets start around 5 pm, and the rum is cheap.
🍸Skip the tourist-trap La Bodeguita del Medio for mojitos and instead find Bar Marsella in La Habana Vieja — operating since 1820, the absinthe-sticky bottles on the shelf have been there for decades and the barman pours heavy.
🏚️Walk the length of Calle Obispo in the early morning before 9 am when the street vendors are setting up and the light is soft — by noon it becomes a tourist corridor; the morning version is entirely different.
🌊Take the cheap commuter ferry (a few Cuban pesos) from the Havana waterfront across to Casablanca to see the giant Cristo de La Habana statue — the view back over the city skyline is the best photo angle in Cuba and almost no package tourists make the crossing.
