✈️ Getting there

GUAAeropuerto Internacional La Aurora
📍 6 km20 min🚕 Taxi🚌 Uber

La Aurora is the only major airport in Central America located inside the city — Uber is the recommended option (around $5–8 to Zona 10 or Zona 1), widely available at arrivals and dramatically cheaper than the official taxi rank. Do not accept offers from unlicensed drivers inside the terminal.

La Aurora is a compact, single-terminal airport that sits in Zona 13 in the southern city — it handles Iberia connections from Madrid and Copa connections via Panama City, as well as American Airlines hubs, making it more internationally connected than its modest size suggests.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Guatemala City — beyond the tourist trail.

🏛️Go to the Museo Popol Vuh on the Francisco Marroquín University campus on a Tuesday morning when it's quiet — the jade death mask and pre-Columbian ceramic collections are genuinely world-class and completely uncrowded compared to equivalent museums in Mexico City.
🌋Book a Pacaya Volcano sunrise hike through a reputable operator (Arcas or Clark Tours) — departing Guatemala City at 4 am, you summit the active lava field as the sun rises and can roast marshmallows on actual lava flows. The view of Agua and Fuego volcanoes from the top is unreal.
🎨Visit the Mercado de Artesanías in Zona 13 on a Saturday — this is where indigenous weavers from the highlands bring their best textiles to sell directly, and the huipil blouses and hand-woven table runners here are far superior in quality and honesty of origin to anything sold to tourists in Antigua.
🍽️Eat lunch at one of the Zona 1 market comedores on Calle 18 between 6a and 7a Avenidas — descend the stairs into the food hall under the market arcade, point at whatever the family at the next table is eating, and pay less than $4 for the best pepián (pumpkin-seed stew) you will find in the country.
📚Walk through the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura on Plaza Mayor completely unguided and unrushed — the murals by Alfredo Gálvez Suárez on the second floor depict Guatemalan history from the Maya creation myth through the Spanish conquest, and are among the most ambitious and affecting works of 20th-century Latin American public art.
