📍 47 km45 min🚌 TER Train🚕 Taxi🚌 Bus

The TER regional train from the airport terminal to central Dakar takes approximately 45 minutes and costs 3,000 CFA (around EUR 4.50) in standard class — by far the most reliable and affordable option; taxis to the city centre cost 18,000–25,000 CFA (EUR 27–38).

A modern airport 47 km east of Dakar that opened in 2017, serving Air France, Air Senegal, Turkish Airlines, and several European carriers; the TER train line connecting it directly to the city centre opened in 2025 and transformed the transfer experience.

Don't Miss

Hidden gems and local experiences in Dakar — beyond the tourist trail.

⛴️Gorée Island — take the 8 a.m. ferry from the Dakar ferry terminal (tickets from 5,000 CFA return) to have the Maison des Esclaves museum almost to yourself before the midday crowds. Spend an extra hour after the museum walking the car-free lanes to see the artists' studios — several painters sell directly from their workshops at far better prices than the main market.
🌊Ngor Island surf at dawn — a 5-minute pirogue ride from Ngor beach for about 500 CFA. The break here is suitable for intermediate surfers and the left-hander off the island's north tip is one of Dakar's most consistent. Ngor Island Surf Camp rents boards. The beach itself is ideal for non-surfers at weekends when Dakar families colonise it.
🎨Village des Arts in Ouakam (Route de la Corniche Ouest) — a working artists' compound where over 100 Senegalese painters, sculptors, and installation artists have their studios. Visit on a weekday afternoon when the artists are actually working and you can walk from studio to studio. Completely free, completely authentic.
🐟Eat thieboudienne at Chez Loutcha for lunch — the national dish of broken rice cooked in tomato and fish stock with stuffed whole fish and stewed vegetables. Chez Loutcha in the Plateau district serves a version that locals consider definitive. Go at 12:30 p.m. when it comes fresh off the stove and the dining room fills with government workers.
🥁Catch a live mbalax night at Just 4 U Club in Sacré-Coeur — Dakar's best live music venue hosts Senegalese artists on weekend nights. Doors open late (11 p.m.); things don't warm up until midnight. Dress to impress — Dakarois take their nights out seriously. Taxi back to the hotel; walking at 3 a.m. is not advised.
