A mid-sized regional hub with one main terminal, Bandaranaike handles SriLankan Airlines' hub operations alongside Emirates, Qatar Airways, and a growing number of European charter services; it's functional but dated, with limited airside dining options.

🍛Eat a rice and curry lunch on a banana leaf at a local 'hotel' (Sri Lankan slang for a local restaurant) — look for plastic chairs, ceiling fans, and a handwritten menu on a board. The Ministry of Crab in Colombo is famous, but the ¥400-600 meal at a roadside spot in Galle or Kandy will be equally memorable and costs ¥300-500 LKR.

🏄Surf Arugam Bay on the east coast (open May-October) — this bay is a genuine world-class point break and the village remains small enough that it hasn't been over-commercialised. Hire a board from Surf Lanka for USD 8/day and take a lesson at the Main Point if you're a beginner; the bay is forgiving in the morning.
