Amman is a hilly, white-stone capital built across seven jebels, blending Roman ruins, Circassian heritage, and a young, café-driven contemporary scene in Jabal Amman and Weibdeh. Most travelers use it as a base for Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea, all reachable as day or overnight trips.

Don't miss

🏛️

Visit the Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a) at dawn before the tour groups arrive — the Umayyad Palace and Temple of Hercules are dramatic at first light, and you'll have views across the white city's 19 hills completely to yourself.

🥗

Eat mansaf (the Jordanian national dish — lamb slow-cooked in fermented dried yoghurt) at Sufra restaurant on Rainbow Street. It's a Friday lunch institution; go with appetite and accept the communal bread-tearing tradition.

🛁

Float in the Dead Sea — it's 1 hour from Amman by rental car or a cheap shared taxi from the 7th Circle. Go on a weekday morning, bring flip-flops for the sharp salt crystals, and rinse off immediately after — the salt burns cuts.

🎨

Walk the length of Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman on a Thursday evening when it's at its liveliest — the galleries, bookshops, and outdoor terraces around 1st Circle are packed with Jordanian students and young professionals.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a)

Start at the Citadel — the heart of ancient Amman. The Archaeological Museum here is small but excellent, and the views from the Temple of Hercules across downtown are not to be missed. Arrive before 9am.

Roman Theatre & Downtown

Walk downhill from the Citadel to the 6,000-seat Roman Theatre (2nd century AD), still remarkably intact. The surrounding downtown streets — Al-Hashemi and Al-Malek Faysal — are the old commercial city, worth a wander.

Jabal Amman & Rainbow Street

Take a taxi up to 1st Circle and walk Rainbow Street in the late afternoon — browse the shops, stop at a café terrace, and watch the city's evening social scene warm up.

🍽️

Sufra

Traditional Jordanian cooking in a converted old Amman house on Rainbow Street — the mezze spread and grilled lamb are exceptional. A real taste of the country's culinary identity.

2

Day 2

Hashem Restaurant (Breakfast)

The essential Amman breakfast: Hashem in downtown serves falafel, ful, and fresh flatbread around the clock for next to nothing. Go at 8am and eat like a local.

Jordan Museum

The best single cultural stop in the city — the Jordan Museum on Ras al-Ain Street holds the Dead Sea Scrolls (the originals, not replicas) and an excellent overview of Jordan's history from prehistory to modern day. Plan 2–3 hours.

Jabal al-Weibdeh Art Walk

The neighbourhood just north of Jabal Amman is Amman's bohemian quarter — galleries, independent cafés, and the excellent Darat al-Funun contemporary art complex set in a 1920s villa with a Roman ruin in the garden.

🍽️

Fakhr El-Din

Regarded as Amman's finest traditional Lebanese-Jordanian restaurant, set in a 1950s mansion in Jabal Amman — formal but not stuffy, and the mezze table here is extraordinary.

3

Day 3

Dead Sea Morning

Hire a taxi for the day (negotiate around JD40–50 return) and head to the Dead Sea for a morning float — the surreal buoyancy never loses its novelty. The public beach at Amman Beach is cheapest; resort day passes offer showers and pools.

Madaba & Mount Nebo (Optional)

If your driver is willing, stop at Madaba on the return — the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in St George's Church is genuinely breathtaking. Mount Nebo (where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land) is 10 minutes further.

Abdali Boulevard (Evening)

End your Amman visit in the modern Abdali development — shopping, restaurants, and a pleasant pedestrian boulevard. A very different side of the city from downtown.

🍽️

Tawaheen Al-Hawa

A long-standing Amman institution on the road to the Dead Sea — famous for their whole roasted Jordanian lamb (zarb). Call ahead to reserve as the zarb takes hours to prepare.
