Athens is where Western civilisation began — a chaotic, beautiful, sun-baked city where you can walk from the world's best-preserved ancient monuments to vibrant neighbourhood street markets in under fifteen minutes. The city has transformed dramatically in recent years: districts like Monastiraki, Koukaki, and Exarchia now offer excellent cafés and restaurants alongside their ancient fame.

Don't miss
Visit the Acropolis at opening time (8am sharp in summer) — you'll have the Parthenon largely to yourself for the first 45 minutes. The afternoon crowds are brutal; a morning visit is not optional, it's essential.
Eat souvlaki at Kostas on Plateia Agias Irinis in Monastiraki — the pork souvlaki with tomato and paprika sauce is €2.50 and has been made the same way since 1950. It's so popular they sell out and close by early afternoon.
Take the tram from Syntagma to Glyfada beach (45 min, €1.40) — Athens has a proper urban riviera that most visitors ignore. Hire a sun lounger at Asteras beach club or find a free rocky spot and swim in the Saronic Gulf.
Spend two hours in the National Archaeological Museum (Patission 44) on a weekday morning — it's the finest collection of ancient Greek art in the world and remarkably uncrowded outside peak hours. The Antikythera Mechanism is here.
