Edinburgh splits cleanly in two: the medieval Old Town with its castle on a volcanic plug, and Georgian New Town's elegant crescents below. Festival August transforms the city into the world's biggest arts gathering, but the rest of the year offers cosier pleasures — Arthur's Seat hikes, dimly lit whisky bars, and the Royal Mile's closes.

Don't miss
Climb Arthur's Seat at dawn — the extinct volcano in the middle of the city rewards the 45-minute hike with 360-degree views of Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and on clear days, the Highlands. Completely free, and the early light is extraordinary.
Do the Scotch Whisky Experience on the Royal Mile (book online, CHF 19 / £16) — not a tourist trap, genuinely the clearest intro to Scotch regions and production. The tutored nosing of four regional styles is worth the ticket alone.
If visiting in August, book Fringe shows at least 3 weeks ahead — the best free-venue acts sell out. The Pleasance Courtyard and Underbelly are the reliable hubs. For non-August visits, the Traverse Theatre programmes challenging new Scottish writing year-round.
Walk Calton Hill at dusk for the best view of the Old Town skyline — the incomplete 'Athens of the North' monument and Nelson's column form a strange, melancholy silhouette above the city. Much quieter than the castle esplanade.
Weekend itinerary · 2 days
Day 1
Edinburgh Castle
Open from 9:30am — arrive at opening to beat coach tour groups. Focus on the Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny; the Great Hall and War Memorial are genuinely moving. Book tickets online (£19.50) to skip the queue.
Royal Mile Walk to Holyrood
Walk the full length of the Royal Mile from castle to palace, ducking into the closes (alleyways) that branch off both sides. Advocates Close, Fleshmarket Close, and Mary King's Close (the underground street) reward exploration.
Arthur's Seat Sunset
Enter Holyrood Park at the palace gates and take the steep but clearly marked path to the summit of Arthur's Seat (251m). Allow 45 minutes up, 30 minutes down. The sunset view over the city is one of Europe's finest free experiences.
The Witchery by the Castle
An atmospheric Gothic dining room right beside the castle serving exceptional Scottish beef and game. Splurge-worthy for dinner — the theatrical interior is part of the experience. Book at least a week ahead.
Day 2
Calton Hill Morning
Walk up Calton Hill before 9am for clear views and solitude. The panorama takes in the Old Town, New Town, and the Firth of Forth — better photography than the castle esplanade and completely free.
Scottish National Gallery
Free entry to one of Britain's best small art galleries on the Mound. The Scottish Colourists room (Peploe, Cadell, Hunter) and the Velázquez 'Old Woman Cooking Eggs' are highlights. Allow 90 minutes.
Leith Walk to The Shore
Take a 20-minute walk (or Lothian bus) down to Leith — Edinburgh's port district is rapidly gentrifying but retains a genuine edge. The Shore waterfront has the city's best restaurant strip.
Fishers Bistro
Edinburgh's most beloved seafood restaurant, in a converted signal tower on Leith's Shore. The crab bisque and hand-dived scallops are extraordinary — book ahead even for lunch on weekends.
Travel tips
- →Avoid August unless you've come specifically for the Fringe — prices triple and accommodation is scarce
- →Climb Arthur's Seat at sunrise for the best view without crowds — it's an easier hike than it looks
- →Book Castle tickets online; the walk-up queue can swallow an hour even in shoulder season
