Jakarta is Indonesia's sprawling, chaotic megacity, a place of glittering malls and skyscrapers alongside historic Dutch colonial quarters in Kota Tua. While often used as a transit point, the city rewards visitors with world-class Indonesian food, lively nightlife in Kemang and SCBD, and the National Museum's deep dive into the archipelago's cultures.

Don't miss

🏛️

Arrive at Fatahillah Square in Kota Tua by 7am — the cobblestone plaza is ghost-quiet before tour groups descend, and the colonial facades photograph beautifully in low morning light. The Jakarta History Museum inside the old Town Hall costs just 5,000 IDR.

🍜

Eat soto betawi (Jakarta's rich coconut milk beef soup) at a street stall in Pasar Santa market in South Jakarta — it's the version locals actually eat, not the tourist-restaurant interpretation. Order it with rice cake (ketupat) and extra emping crackers.

🎨

The National Gallery of Indonesia on Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur houses the country's finest collection of modern Indonesian art and is almost always uncrowded — free entry on Sundays. Look for the massive Raden Saleh oil paintings.

🌆

Head to the rooftop bar at Henshin (The Westin Jakarta, 67th floor) for sundowners — the 360-degree view of the Jakarta skyline turning orange at dusk is one of the great urban spectacles in Asia. Arrive at 5:30pm before the after-work crowd.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Kota Tua (Old Batavia)

Start at Fatahillah Square by 8am — explore the Jakarta History Museum in the 17th-century Town Hall, then walk the surrounding colonial streets past the Wayang Museum and the old Portuguese cannon Si Jagur.

Glodok Chinatown

Walk 15 minutes south from Kota Tua into Glodok's narrow lanes — find the Jin De Yuan temple (Jakarta's oldest Chinese temple, circa 1650) hidden behind a gold shopfront on Jalan Kemenangan.

National Monument (Monas)

Take a GrabBike to the 132-metre National Monument — go inside for panoramic city views from the observation deck (entry 25,000 IDR). The surrounding Merdeka Park is ideal for an early evening walk.

🍽️

Café Batavia

Housed in an 1837 Dutch colonial building on Fatahillah Square; order the nasi tumpeng rijsttafel for a theatrical spread of Indonesian dishes served in the most atmospheric room in Jakarta.

2

Day 2

Menteng neighbourhood walk

This leafy, aristocratic residential area hides embassies, colonial villas, and Taman Suropati — a shaded park perfect in the morning. Walk Jalan Cut Meutia and Jalan Teuku Umar for Jakarta's best colonial residential architecture.

National Gallery of Indonesia

The finest collection of modern Indonesian painting in the country, housed in two classical buildings on Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur. Raden Saleh's dramatic 19th-century canvases alone justify the visit; free on Sundays.

Blok M & M Bloc Space

Jakarta's most energetic creative district — M Bloc Space is a converted post office filled with indie cafés, record stores, and concept shops. The area around Blok M Mall comes alive at night with street food vendors and live music.

🍽️

Lara Djonggrang

A converted colonial villa in Menteng crammed with antique Javanese artifacts — order the bebek betutu (slow-cooked duck) and don't leave without trying the klepon dessert. Book ahead at weekends.

3

Day 3

Pasar Santa market

South Jakarta's hipster market has transformed from a traditional pasar into a labyrinth of vintage clothing, indie vinyl, craft coffee, and the city's best street food — arrive by 10am before it gets packed.

SCBD & Senayan City area

Jakarta's glossy business district reveals another side of the city — the outdoor Sudirman Park is worth a stroll, and the adjacent Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia malls are legitimately impressive architectural spaces.

Henshin Rooftop Sundowner

End your Jakarta stay 67 floors up at The Westin's Henshin bar — arrive at 5:30pm for the sunset over the megacity before your evening flight or final dinner below.

🍽️

Namaaz Dining

Indonesia's first molecular gastronomy restaurant — Chef Andrian Ishak reimagines classic Indonesian flavours through 17 theatrical courses. Reserve weeks in advance; it's a proper occasion.
