Rhodes pairs a remarkably intact medieval Old Town — a UNESCO-listed walled city built by the Knights of St John — with long Aegean beaches and the clifftop Acropolis of Lindos. It's larger and greener than most Greek islands, with enough Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and Italian colonial buildings to fill several days.

Don't miss
Walk the walls of the Old Town at dusk — the 4km circuit along the ramparts is free to walk from the Palace of the Grand Masters and offers rooftop-level views over both the medieval city and the harbour. Most tourists skip it entirely.
Take the 40-minute drive up to Tsambika Monastery: the panoramic view over the east coast bay is Rhodes' best-kept photo spot, and the climb (280 steps) thins the crowds to almost nothing before 9am.
Eat at the fish tavernas in Kamiros Skala — a tiny working harbour on the west coast completely ignored by tourist itineraries. Order the grilled octopus and whatever fish the boats brought in that morning.
Skip the overpriced restaurants on the Street of the Knights and head to the Agora market square in the New Town for the same mezze plates at half the price, eaten alongside locals rather than tour groups.
Travel tips
- →Walk the Old Town after 9pm when day-trippers leave and the cobblestones cool down
- →Drive south to Prasonisi for empty beaches — the north coast is windy and crowded
- →Climb to Lindos Acropolis early; there's almost no shade on the path
