Dubai is the world's most spectacular exercise in rapid urban ambition — a desert city that has built the world's tallest tower, an indoor ski slope, and some of the finest luxury hospitality on the planet within a few decades. Beyond the spectacle, the city rewards exploration in its older creek-side districts, traditional souks, and the multicultural mix of its permanent resident population.

Don't miss
Visit the Burj Khalifa observation deck at the 148th floor (At The Top SKY) rather than the standard 124th — book the first slot at 8:30am before heat haze builds, and you'll often have the deck nearly to yourself.
Cross Dubai Creek on an abra (traditional wooden water taxi) for just 1 AED — the 5-minute crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai is the most authentic and cheapest experience in the city, unchanged for decades.
Visit the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood at dusk — the wind-tower architecture and narrow lanes of the old merchant quarter host the Dubai Museum and quiet courtyard cafes that feel entirely removed from the modern city.
Eat at the Deira Fish Market early morning (open from 7am) then have your purchase cooked at a nearby restaurant — this is where Dubai's chefs and households shop, and vendors will let you watch the action over thick karak tea.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Downtown Dubai & Burj Khalifa
Head straight to Downtown — book the Burj Khalifa's 124th floor observation deck online in advance (ticket prices triple if bought on the day). Time your visit for 30 minutes before sunset for the full city-to-desert panorama.
Dubai Fountain
The world's largest choreographed fountain performs every 30 minutes from 6pm at the base of the Burj Khalifa — watch from the free waterfront promenade or book a restaurant table with a fountain view.
Dubai Mall
Skip the shops and head to the aquarium (one of the world's largest acrylic tanks, visible for free from the mall floor) and the indoor ice rink — both are genuinely impressive and not simply luxury retail.
Zuma Dubai
Japanese robata grill that set the benchmark for upscale dining in Dubai — the black cod in miso and the wagyu gyoza are exceptional. Book well ahead; the bar area is buzzing even on weekdays.
Day 2
Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
Spend the morning exploring the old quarter — hire a local guide through the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding for a 90-minute walking tour that explains the wind-tower architecture and pearl-diving history.
Abra Creek Crossing & Spice Souk
Cross the Creek by abra (1 AED) to the Deira side — explore the Spice Souk with its open sacks of saffron, dried limes, and frankincense, then walk three minutes to the Gold Souk where hundreds of jewellers line covered arcades.
Dubai Frame
The 150-metre picture frame structure bridges old and new Dubai with a glass floor walkway and split views of historic and modern districts — less crowded than the Burj Khalifa and genuinely clever architecture.
Arabian Tea House
A restored courtyard restaurant in Al Fahidi serving Emirati breakfast platters with khameer bread, halwa, and strong cardamom coffee — go for lunch and order the traditional machboos rice.
Day 3
Jumeirah Beach
Public access beaches like Kite Beach offer free swimming with clear views of the Burj Al Arab — arrive before 9am for a quiet morning swim, then walk the 14km beachfront path toward JBR.
Palm Jumeirah Monorail
Take the Palm Monorail from the mainland across the Palm trunk to Atlantis hotel at the far end — it's a tourist ride but the elevated views of the Palm's frond layout are otherwise impossible to appreciate.
Al Quoz Industrial Art District
Dubai's most interesting neighbourhood for art — converted warehouses house Alserkal Avenue, a cluster of cutting-edge contemporary galleries with free entry showing art from across the Arab world and beyond.
Logma
A modern Emirati cafe in Boxpark Jumeirah with inventive twists on traditional dishes — the karak pancakes and luqaimat (sweet dumplings with date syrup) are perfect for a relaxed final brunch.
