Rio de Janeiro has one of the world's most dramatic settings, with granite peaks rising straight out of the Atlantic between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, the Tijuca rainforest and the samba bars of Lapa are unmissable.

Don't miss
Take the Sugarloaf cable car at dusk — the second stage arrives at the summit just as the city lights flicker on over Guanabara Bay, and the crowd thins significantly compared to midday. Buy tickets online to skip the queue.
Walk up to the Mirante Dona Marta viewpoint (free, accessible by taxi or on foot through Santa Teresa) at dawn for the most dramatic angle of Christ the Redeemer with the city below — and none of the selfie-stick crowds at the statue itself.
Spend a Friday night in Pedra do Sal, the informal birthplace of samba in Rio — it's an open-air square in Gamboa where locals gather from around 19:00, bring beer and street food, and the drumming starts spontaneously. No entrance fee, entirely authentic.
Eat a classic feijoada on a Saturday lunch at Restaurante Aprazível in Santa Teresa — the traditional day for this black bean and pork stew, served with caipirinha and a view over the jungle canopy. Book a table on the terrace a week ahead.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Christ the Redeemer at Opening Time
Take the Corcovado rack railway from Cosme Velho at 08:00 when it opens — you'll reach the statue before the tour buses arrive and get the mist-shrouded mountain views that disappear by mid-morning. Book the train ticket online the day before.
Santa Teresa Neighbourhood Walk
Wander downhill from the Corcovado neighbourhood into Santa Teresa's cobbled streets, stopping at Parque das Ruínas (a ruined mansion turned cultural centre with a fantastic free viewpoint) and browsing the independent galleries and tiled facades.
Lapa at Night
The arched Lapa Aqueduct becomes a carnival of street vendors and live samba bars after 21:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. Walk the arches, duck into Bar Carioca da Gema for live music in a small, sweaty room — arrive by 20:30 to get a table.
Bar do Mineiro
A beloved Santa Teresa institution — cash only, packed with locals, serving honest carioca food like coxinha, pão de queijo, and cold Brahma draft. Go between 13:00–15:00 for the full lunch atmosphere.
Day 2
Ipanema Beach Morning
Arrive at Posto 9 (the stretch near Rua Farme de Amoedo) by 08:00 when the sand is nearly empty and the light is golden. Rent a beach chair from a vendor for R$15 and watch the city wake up over the twin peaks of Dois Irmãos.
Feira Hippie de Ipanema
On Sundays, the square at Praça General Osório transforms into one of Rio's best craft markets — proper Brazilian jewellery, leather goods, and art, not cheap imports. Go between 09:00–13:00 before it gets crowded and the best pieces sell.
Sugarloaf Cable Car at Sunset
Book the 17:30 or 18:00 cable car slot online — the summit at dusk is the definitive Rio experience, with Guanabara Bay turning copper below and the city lighting up in stages. Stay for at least an hour and take the last car down.
Astor
A beautiful art deco bar on the Ipanema beachfront doing the city's best caipirinhas alongside serious petiscos (bar snacks). Perfect for the pre-sunset drink before heading to Sugarloaf.
Day 3
Tijuca National Park Hike
The world's largest urban forest sits 20 minutes from the beach — take an Uber to the Cascatinha Taunay waterfall trailhead and walk the relatively easy 3km loop through Atlantic Rainforest with wild orchids and toucans overhead. Go early before it gets hot.
Maracanã Stadium Tour
Even if you're not a football fan, the 78,000-seat Maracanã is a secular cathedral worth seeing — the guided tour (book online, ~R$50) covers the pitch, changing rooms, and the famous Wall of Hands with Pelé's imprint. Weekday tours are quieter.
Botafogo Neighbourhood
Spend the late afternoon in Botafogo — quieter than Ipanema but lined with excellent street food, craft beer bars, and the Cobal do Humaitá market where you can graze across a dozen different food stalls as the sun drops behind the hills.
Lasai
Rio's most interesting fine-dining tasting menu, built around Brazilian ingredients from small producers — book at least two weeks ahead. It's a splurge, but genuinely world-class cooking in a relaxed townhouse setting in Botafogo.
Travel tips
- →Book Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf for early morning to beat clouds and queues
- →Leave valuables in the hotel — take only what you need to the beach
- →Stay in Ipanema or Leblon for the safest, most walkable base
