Don't miss

🌋

Drive the Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) on a Tuesday or Wednesday — weekend crowds are punishing. Leave Reykjavik by 7:30 am, do it clockwise, and you'll have Geysir almost to yourself for the first eruption of the day.

🌌

For Northern Lights, drive 30 minutes south to the Reykjanes Peninsula on a clear night (check vedur.is for cloud cover). The light pollution drops fast and the lava fields make for dramatic foreground. October–March is the season; equinox periods (Sept/March) have the strongest auroral activity.

♨️

Skip the Blue Lagoon (overcrowded, €80+) and instead try the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir or the Sky Lagoon on the Reykjavik harbour edge — the Sky Lagoon's cliff-edge infinity pool over the Atlantic is the better experience at a comparable price.

🍺

Reykjavik's craft beer scene punches well above its size — Kaldi Bar on Laugavegur and Skúli Craft Bar near the harbour are the locals' picks. Happy hour (4–7 pm) cuts prices almost in half, which matters when a pint otherwise costs €12.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Hallgrímskirkja church and Leifur Eiríksson statue

Arrive early and take the lift to the tower (€10) for the best view over Reykjavik's coloured rooftops and the harbour. The modernist concrete exterior is worth photographing from all angles — best light in early morning.

Laugavegur street walking

Walk the length of Laugavegur, Reykjavik's main street, browsing the independent shops, woolens, and design boutiques. The 66°North outlet on the side streets sells previous seasons' gear at 40% off.

Old Harbour seal sculpture and pier

Walk down to the old harbour at sunset — the Sun Voyager sculpture (a few minutes east) is best photographed with the Esja mountain backdrop in late afternoon light. Free, open always.

🍽️

Snaps Bistro

French-Scandinavian bistro on Þórsgata, beloved by locals for its fish of the day and excellent house wine. More affordable than most Reykjavik restaurants at €30–40/person for two courses.

2

Day 2

Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss)

Leave by 7:30 am in your rental car. Þingvellir is where you can walk between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates — go to Almannagjá gorge, it's free and extraordinary. Then Geysir erupts every 5–8 minutes (Strokkur). Gullfoss is Iceland's most powerful waterfall — go to the lower viewing platform for full spray.

Kerið crater lake

On the way back, stop at Kerið (€4 entry) — a 3,000-year-old volcanic crater filled with vivid blue-green water. Walk the rim and the path down to the water. Takes 45 minutes and is genuinely beautiful.

Secret Lagoon (Gamla Laugin), Flúðir

Book ahead (€25) and time your soak for early evening. It's smaller and less developed than the Blue Lagoon but authentic and far cheaper — a natural hot spring pool that's been in use since 1891.

🍽️

Lindin Restaurant, Laugarvatn

On the Golden Circle route at Lake Laugarvatn — the chef uses geothermally cooked rye bread (baked underground) and local trout. It's a genuine destination restaurant, book ahead.

3

Day 3

Reykjanes Peninsula lava fields and lighthouse

Drive 40 minutes southwest to Reykjanestá lighthouse at Iceland's southwestern tip — the landscape is pure Mars: steaming vents, black lava, and North Atlantic crashing against basalt. No tourists, no entry fee.

Sky Lagoon

Book the Sér package (€70, includes ritual and towel) at Sky Lagoon on Reykjavik's harbour edge. The infinity pool over the Atlantic is most dramatic in wind and rain — don't let bad weather put you off, it's actually better.

Settlement Exhibition (Landnámssýningin)

An underground museum built around an actual 10th-century Viking longhouse discovered during construction works in central Reykjavik. Small but excellent — gives the city's history real weight before you leave.

🍽️

Messinn

Reykjavik's best fish restaurant — order the cast-iron skillet of pan-fried catch of the day with butter sauce. Consistently excellent and the best value high-quality seafood in the city. Book ahead for dinner.
