Nice anchors the Côte d'Azur with a 7km Promenade des Anglais, an Italian-flavoured old town that was Sardinian until 1860, and an art scene including Matisse and Chagall museums. The airport is also the gateway to Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, and the perched villages of Èze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence, all reachable without a car.

Don't miss
Visit the Matisse Museum in the Cimiez hill district on a Tuesday morning — it's free on the first Sunday of the month, but Tuesday mornings have the rooms almost to yourself. The studio reconstructions and cut-paper works on the top floor are revelatory.
Shop the Cours Saleya market in Vieux-Nice before 11am (Tuesday to Sunday) — the flower market is dazzling, but head to the food section for socca (chickpea flatbread cooked in wood-fired ovens) and tapenade from the stalls at the back. The socca from Chez René Socca on rue Pairolière is a local institution.
Take the Train des Merveilles (Valley of Wonders train) from Nice Ville station to Tende in the Maritime Alps — a 2-hour journey through river gorges and medieval villages that feels untouched by tourism. The Bronze Age rock carvings in the valley above Tende are a UNESCO site.
Walk up to the Colline du Château (Castle Hill) via the stairs at the east end of the Promenade rather than the lift — the approach through crumbling fortifications is half the point. The waterfall, the ruins, and the view over Vieux-Nice's terracotta roofscape are best in late afternoon light.
Weekend itinerary · 2 days
Day 1
Cours Saleya Market & Vieux-Nice
Start at the Cours Saleya market by 9am for socca, flowers, and olive oil. Then get lost in the pedestrian streets of Vieux-Nice — the Baroque Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate and the Chapel of the Annunciation (Chapelle du Saint-Suaire) reward wandering.
Colline du Château
Climb the Castle Hill stairs at the east end of the beach for panoramic views over the bay of Angels and the old port. The park at the top has free entry and a waterfall — bring a picnic from the market.
Promenade des Anglais Sunset Walk
Walk west along the full Promenade at golden hour — 7km of seafront with the best Riviera light. The pebble beach around Castel Plage is less crowded than the central sections and has free beach access.
Le Safari
The classic Niçois table on Cours Saleya — order the salade niçoise (with local tuna and anchovies, not tinned), the daube de boeuf, and the pan bagnat. Terrace seating with market views and very reasonable prices.
Day 2
Matisse Museum, Cimiez
Take bus 15 (€1.70) up to the Cimiez hill for the Matisse Museum — the 17th-century Genoese villa houses the world's best collection of his works. Arrive at 10am opening to get the rooms quiet. The Cimiez monastery gardens next door have stunning Mediterranean views.
Marc Chagall National Museum
Walk downhill to the Chagall Museum (or bus 15 back) — a purpose-built 1972 building housing 17 large canvases from his Biblical Message series. The blue stained-glass windows in the concert hall are among the most beautiful in France.
Old Port (Le Port) Wander
Finish the trip at Nice's old fishing port — painted facades, the Lympia basin, and the best fish market in town (morning only). The Colline du Château terrace above gives the best view down onto the boats.
Chez René Socca
The oldest socca joint in Nice, on rue Pairolière — a take-away counter serving freshly baked socca, pissaladière, and stuffed vegetables by weight. Join the queue after the morning market for peak freshness.
Travel tips
- →Take the coastal train along the Riviera — it's cheap, scenic, and beats fighting Corniche traffic
- →Eat socca at Chez Pipo in Vieux Nice — it's the local chickpea-flour pancake you won't find inland
- →The pebbly beaches need water shoes; pack a pair or buy cheap ones at any Monoprix
