Almaty is Kazakhstan's former capital and most cosmopolitan city, set dramatically against the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains with skiing at Shymbulak just a cable car away. Tree-lined streets, Soviet-era landmarks like the Zenkov Cathedral, and a buzzing cafe and craft beer scene make it a surprisingly easy and rewarding stop in Central Asia.

Don't miss
Big Almaty Lake: this glacial lake at 2,511 metres turns an impossible shade of turquoise-green in summer. Go on a weekday and arrive by 9 AM — the light is best in the morning and you beat the domestic tourist rush. Take a taxi from the city (around 3,500–5,000 KZT) since public buses don't run the full route. Bring a warm layer: it is often 10°C colder than the city.
Shymbulak gondola in summer: the ski resort's cable car runs year-round and reaches 3,200 metres. In July and August the upper slopes are wildflower meadows with views across the Zailiisky Alatau range. Take bus 12 from the city centre to the base station, then the cable car (around 5,000 KZT return). The mountain restaurants at the top charge city prices, not tourist prices.
Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar) on a Saturday morning: the covered market near Panfilov Park sells the famous Aport apples (a local variety the size of a grapefruit), Irimshik cheese, fermented mare's milk (qymyz), and piled walnuts. Arrive by 9 AM for the best produce and the least crowded aisles. The basement level has a compelling meat and dairy hall.
Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) at Panfilov Park: a 1907 entirely wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral — no nails used in construction — painted yellow and white against the dark Tien Shan backdrop. Go early morning when light comes through the interior windows and the park benches are occupied by chess players. Free entry.
Weekend itinerary · 2 days
Day 1
Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral
Start the morning at the 1907 wooden Zenkov Cathedral — one of the world's largest wooden structures — when the park's chess players are already at their boards and the light is at its best through the trees. The adjacent Museum of Folk Musical Instruments is in a beautiful building and takes just an hour.
Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar)
A 10-minute walk from Panfilov Park — the covered market is the best introduction to Kazakh produce. Try the Aport apples, buy dried apricots and walnuts, and have a bowl of beshbarmak from the basement food hall.
Kok-Tobe cable car and hilltop park
The gondola rises 1,100 metres above the city to Kok-Tobe hill, where the views over Almaty backed by the Tien Shan are outstanding. Tickets around KZT 8,000 return. The hilltop has a small amusement park and several cafes — go late afternoon for the best light.
AUYL
Contemporary Kazakh cuisine near Medeu — the beshbarmak (flat noodles, boiled meat, onion broth) is the defining national dish done properly, with mountain views from the terrace. Book in advance.
Day 2
Big Almaty Lake day trip
Take a taxi up the Bolshaya Almatinka river valley to the glacial lake at 2,511 metres — the 45-minute ride passes through progressively dramatic mountain scenery. Arrive by 9 AM for the turquoise water in best light. Walk the surrounding viewpoints before the afternoon clouds roll in.
Medeu skating rink
On the way back from Big Almaty Lake, stop at Medeu — the world's highest outdoor skating rink at 1,691 metres. Even in summer the setting in the mountain valley is beautiful and the outdoor cafés around the rink serve good baursaks (fried dough) with honey.
Shymbulak cable car base station
From Medeu, the bus continues to Shymbulak base station — the cable car ride up to 3,200 metres and back takes about an hour but the mountain views at the top in summer are exceptional. Worth the extra trip if weather is clear.
Rumi, Medeu district
A local favourite combining a mountain-district setting with Central Asian and European dishes — good lagman noodle soup and grilled meats in a warm, unhurried atmosphere.
