Geneva is small for an international city — French-speaking, lakeside, and ringed by the Alps and Jura — with the UN, the Red Cross, and CERN giving it diplomatic weight beyond its size. The lake itself is the main attraction in summer; in winter, the resorts of Chamonix and Verbier are within a short drive.

Don't miss

🏔️

Take the train from Cornavin station to Chamonix (1h40) on a clear morning — the Mont Blanc massif views from the valley are free and staggering. Go Tuesday–Thursday to dodge weekend crowds.

🍷

Walk the Lavaux terraced vineyards on the north shore of Lac Léman — a UNESCO site and one of Switzerland's best-kept secrets. The 10km Lavaux Express trail from Lutry to Cully passes family-owned caves offering tastings for around CHF 5.

🕰️

Visit the Patek Philippe Museum on a weekday afternoon (closed Mondays). The fourth floor houses movements from 1530 — far more fascinating than any luxury boutique, and admission is only CHF 10.

🌅

Catch sunset from the Bains des Pâquis jetty on the Right Bank — locals swim here year-round, and the fondue served in the small chalet onsite is the cheapest and most atmospheric in the city (around CHF 22).

Weekend itinerary · 2 days

Day 1

Jet d'Eau & Old Town

Walk from the lakefront Jet d'Eau to the hilltop Old Town (Vieille-Ville). Climb the north tower of St Peter's Cathedral for panoramic Alpine views — CHF 5, worth every centime.

Parc des Bastions

Stroll down to the Reformation Wall, a 100m sculpted monument to Calvin and other reformers hidden in a pleasant park. Locals play oversized chess here on weekend afternoons.

MAMCO Contemporary Art Museum

Geneva's main contemporary art museum occupies a converted factory in the Plainpalais district. Free entry on the first Sunday of the month; otherwise CHF 15.

🍽️

Café du Soleil

The oldest fondue house in Geneva, tucked into a narrow street in Petit-Saconnex since 1849. Order the moitié-moitié (half Gruyère, half Vacherin) — no reservations, so arrive before 7pm.

Day 2

Bains des Pâquis Morning Swim

Start early with a swim off the famous Pâquis jetty — open from 7am, entry CHF 2. The hammam and sauna on the jetty make for a decadent lakeside morning.

United Nations Guided Tour

Book the 1-hour guided tour of the Palais des Nations (CHF 17) to walk the same corridors where the Geneva Conventions were signed. Book 48 hours ahead online — bring your passport.

Carouge Village Wander

Cross into the Italian-designed Carouge quarter by tram (line 12) for artisan shops, street murals, and the covered market. Best visited Saturday morning when the place du marché hums with locals.

🍽️

Chez ma Cousine

Legendary budget rotisserie chicken on Place du Bourg-de-Four in the Old Town — one price for a half chicken with salad and bread (around CHF 18). Always full, always worth it.
