Naples is Italy at its most concentrated — birthplace of pizza, gateway to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and home to a chaotic, ancient centro storico that's a UNESCO site in its own right. Beyond the city, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Ischia, and the smoking cone of Vesuvius are all within reach.

Don't miss

🍕

Eat at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele on Via Cesare Sersale — order the Margherita or Marinara (those are the only options) and arrive before noon to avoid a 45-minute queue. It costs under €6 and is widely considered the definitive Neapolitan pizza on the planet.

💀

Visit the Fontanelle Cemetery in the Materdei neighbourhood — a vast cave packed with 40,000 skulls. It's free, rarely crowded, and tells a deeply strange story about Neapolitan cult worship of anonymous bones. Go on a weekday morning.

🏛️

The National Archaeological Museum (MANN) holds the greatest collection of Roman art on earth — including explicit frescoes from Pompeii locked in the 'Secret Cabinet' (ask staff to open it). Book online to skip the queue; Tuesday morning is the quietest slot.

🛵

Walk through the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarter) at dusk when the street food vendors come out — try 'cuoppo' (a paper cone of fried seafood or vegetables) from a street stall for €3-4. This grid of narrow alleys is the real Naples, not the waterfront.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Spaccanapoli & Historic Centre

Start on Via Spaccanapoli, the arrow-straight street that cuts through the old city. Duck into San Gregorio Armeno (the street of nativity craftsmen) and the ornate Gesù Nuovo church — the facade is covered in mysterious diamond-shaped stones.

National Archaeological Museum (MANN)

Spend 2 hours here in the afternoon. Don't miss the Farnese Bull sculpture (largest surviving ancient marble group), the Alexander Mosaic from Pompeii, and the Secret Cabinet of erotic art. Book tickets online (€22).

Quartieri Spagnoli at Sunset

Walk into the Spanish Quarter as the light fades and the neighbourhood comes alive. Stop for a 'frittatina di pasta' (fried pasta cake) from any street vendor — it's a classic Neapolitan street snack for €2.

🍽️

Osteria della Materia

Small neighbourhood trattoria in the Quartieri Spagnoli doing traditional Neapolitan cucina povera — the ragù napoletano (slow-cooked meat sauce) is exceptional. Book ahead, it fills up fast.

Day 2

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele

Arrive at 10:45am (they open at 11) for the definitive Neapolitan pizza experience. Order a Margherita and a Marinara and compare — both cost under €6. The room is basic, the pizza is extraordinary.

Castel dell'Ovo & Lungomare

Walk along the seafront promenade to the egg-shaped castle on a small island. The interior is free, the views of the bay and Vesuvius are stunning, and the surrounding Borgo Marinaro fishing neighbourhood has good afternoon aperitivo spots.

Fontanelle Cemetery

Take a taxi (€10) up to this extraordinary bone cemetery carved into the tuff hill. Free entry, almost no tourists, and one of the strangest and most affecting places in the city. Closes at 5pm.

🍽️

Trattoria Nennella

A legendary, raucous lunch institution in the Quartieri Spagnoli where the waiters shout the specials and the food changes daily. Two courses with wine costs around €15. Cash only, expect a queue.

3

Day 3

Day Trip to Pompeii

Take the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale (€2.80 each way, 35 minutes) to Pompeii Scavi station. Arrive at opening (9am) to get ahead of the tour groups. Allow 3-4 hours to do it justice.

Royal Palace & Piazza del Plebiscito

Back in Naples, visit the vast Piazza del Plebiscito — the largest square in the city — and explore the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace, €10 entry) with its grand ceremonial rooms and royal library.

Caffè Gambrinus

End with coffee and a sfogliatella pastry at this beautiful 19th-century café on the piazza. Standing at the bar costs a fraction of sitting down — order a 'caffè' and drink it the Neapolitan way: fast, strong, and sweet.

🍽️

Il Garum

Sophisticated Neapolitan cooking near the MANN museum — strong on local seafood and creative takes on traditional dishes. One of the best mid-range restaurants in the centre.
