Faro is the unsung capital of the Algarve, with a sleepy walled old town and easy access to the Ria Formosa lagoon's barrier islands and unspoiled beaches. While most travellers race off to the resort coast, the city itself rewards a slow afternoon of seafood, tilework, and ferry-hopping.

Don't miss

🦴

Visit the Capela dos Ossos (Bone Chapel) inside Igreja do Carmo at opening time (9am) before tour groups arrive — the walls lined with 1,245 monks' bones are genuinely eerie, not just morbid Instagram bait.

🚤

Take the ferry from Porta Nova dock to Ilha Deserta (€10 return, runs April–Oct) — the sandbar island has one eco-restaurant and zero buildings; arrive by 10am to walk the 6km beach in near-solitude.

🐟

Eat cataplana (clam and cured pork stew) at a restaurant on Rua do Prior in the old town rather than the marina — same fish, half the price, locals at the next table.

🕊️

Walk the medieval walls of the Cidade Velha just before sunset when the light hits the lagoon — the Arco da Vila gate is the best photo spot and is completely free to access any time.

Weekend itinerary · 2 days

1

Day 1

Cidade Velha (Old Town)

Start at the Arco da Vila and spend the morning exploring the walled old town — the Roman-era streets are quiet before noon; don't miss the Renaissance courtyard inside the Cathedral, which costs just €3.50 to enter.

Museu Municipal de Faro

Just inside the old town walls, this compact archaeological museum holds Roman mosaics from the ancient city of Ossonoba — the centrepiece floor mosaic of the ocean god is genuinely spectacular and rarely crowded.

Ria Formosa waterfront walk

Walk south from the old town along the harbour front to the Jardim Manuel Bivar — grab a coffee at one of the kiosk cafés and watch the ferries leave for the barrier islands as the afternoon light drops.

🍽️

Tasca do Ricky

A no-frills local tascas on Rua do Alportel serving daily fish specials on a chalkboard — the grilled bream with potatoes is exceptional and a full meal costs under €15.

2

Day 2

Ilha Deserta day trip

Catch the 10am ferry from Porta Nova dock to the uninhabited sandbar island — walk the full length of the beach, swim in the calm lagoon side, and book ahead for lunch at Estamine restaurant (the only building on the island).

Igreja do Carmo & Bone Chapel

Back in the city by mid-afternoon, visit the twin-towered Carmelite church and pay €4 to enter the side chapel whose walls are constructed from the remains of Franciscan monks — brief but unforgettable.

Mercado Municipal de Faro

End the day at the covered market near the ferry terminal — buy local carob products, fig sweets (figos cheios), and almond pastries to take home; vendors start packing up by 2pm so don't leave this too late.

🍽️

Dois Irmãos

One of Faro's oldest restaurants (open since 1925), serving classic Algarvian grilled fish and shellfish — order the açorda de marisco (shellfish bread stew) and sit in the tiled dining room rather than outside.
