Climb the Jamestown Lighthouse at 6 AM before the heat arrives — the view over the old fishing harbour, with wooden pirogues heading out to sea, is one of the great free moments in West Africa. A local guide (arrange through the neighbourhood association) adds the human layer that makes it unforgettable.
Visit the W.E.B. Du Bois Center on a Saturday morning — the memorial and library are calm and deeply moving, with the graves of Du Bois and his wife in the garden. Then walk ten minutes to the Arts Centre for National Culture to spend an hour watching kente weavers at work and bargaining for fabric directly from the weaver.
Eat banku and tilapia at a roadside chop bar — look for one with plastic stools and a smoking grill, not a printed menu. The Osu neighbourhood around Oxford Street has several. Pair it with a bag of chilled bissap (hibiscus) juice from a street vendor for the full experience.
Go to Labadi Beach on a weekday, not a weekend — the entrance fee is a couple of dollars, the atmosphere is a social pageant, and the grilled fish with shito pepper sauce is exceptional. On Sundays the beach gets extremely crowded; Wednesday evenings have live music.

Day 1
Jamestown Walking Tour
Start in Accra's oldest coastal quarter at 8 AM before the heat builds. Walk from the lighthouse down to the fishing harbour to watch the morning catch being sorted, then explore the murals and colonial architecture with a neighbourhood guide (GH¢50–80, arranged locally).
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
A short taxi ride from Jamestown, the mausoleum and surrounding gardens provide essential context for understanding modern Ghana. Spend 45–60 minutes in the small museum — the personal artefacts and newsreel footage are genuinely affecting.
Makola Market
Accra's vast central market is deliberately overwhelming — kente cloth, dried fish, spices, and noise compressed into labyrinthine alleys. Hire a guide at the entrance (negotiate upfront) or simply dive in and follow your nose. Budget one to two hours.
Buka Restaurant (Osu)
Lively West African restaurant in a courtyard setting — the smoky jollof rice, goat skewers, and egusi soup are reliably excellent. One of the best upscale Ghanaian kitchens in the city.
Day 2
Arts Centre for National Culture
Arrive at 9 AM to watch kente weavers before the commercial bustle kicks in. The adjacent craft market is good for batik fabric, beaded jewellery, and wood carvings — prices are negotiable and the quality varies, so take your time.
National Museum of Ghana
Open Tuesday to Sunday 9 AM–5 PM. Three galleries cover pre-colonial artefacts, traditional regalia, and contemporary West African art. Plan 90 minutes — the collection is rich and the explanatory text is genuinely informative rather than just decorative.
Labadi Beach (La Pleasure Beach)
Spend the late afternoon at Accra's most social beach. Entry is a few dollars. Go on a weekday for a relaxed scene — grilled tilapia, cold beer, and the extraordinary spectacle of Accra at leisure. The Sunday crowd and Wednesday reggae nights are worth a separate visit.
Chez Clarisse (Osu)
Intimate terrace restaurant doing char-grilled tilapia with cassava attiéké and chilli, plus excellent groundnut soup. Reliably good, no-frills, genuinely local.
