Don't miss

🏛️

Take the Chicago Architecture Center's 90-minute river boat tour — book the 9am slot to avoid the afternoon crowds and get the best light on the Tribune Tower and Wrigley Building. It's the single best way to understand the city.

🎵

Catch a show at Andy's Jazz Club on Hubbard Street — they do a free lunchtime jazz set on weekdays starting at noon, no minimum spend. Real musicians, tight room, no tourists.

🍕

Skip the tourist deep-dish queues at Giordano's and go to Pequod's in Lincoln Park instead — cash only, no reservations, but their caramelised-crust deep dish is the one locals actually eat.

🌅

Walk to the end of Navy Pier at dusk for the best free skyline panorama in the city — the western view back toward downtown with the lake in the foreground beats any rooftop bar.

Weekend itinerary · 3 days

1

Day 1

Chicago Architecture Center River Tour

Book the 9am boat tour from the Chicago Architecture Center on E Wacker Drive — 90 minutes on the Chicago River with expert commentary on 50+ landmark buildings. One of the best architecture experiences in the world.

Millennium Park & The Bean

Walk north along the Riverwalk to Millennium Park. Arrive around noon when the light hits Cloud Gate (the Bean) from the south — the reflections of the skyline are worth the cliché. Check if there's a free lunchtime concert at the Pritzker Pavilion.

Art Institute of Chicago

Spend the afternoon in the Art Institute — focus on the Impressionist collection on the second floor (Seurat's Sunday on La Grande Jatte is here) and the Thorne Miniature Rooms if you want something unexpected. Book tickets online to skip the queue.

🍽️

Girl & the Goat

Stephanie Izard's flagship in the West Loop — small plates built for sharing, excellent wood-oven vegetables and wood-roasted pig face. Book weeks ahead or try for the bar at opening time (4:30pm).

2

Day 2

Wrigley Field & Wrigleyville

Take the Red Line north to Addison and walk around Wrigley Field even if there's no game — the 1914 stadium is a piece of American history. If the Cubs are playing, last-minute standing-room tickets often appear on the MLB app.

Lincoln Park & Zoo

Head south to Lincoln Park for a walk along the lakefront. The Lincoln Park Zoo is free and surprisingly good — arrive before 11am when the big cats are most active.

Navy Pier Sunset

Take a short taxi or rideshare to Navy Pier and walk to the very end at golden hour for the skyline view westward. The Ferris wheel is touristy but the pier itself is free and the view is genuinely stunning.

🍽️

Pequod's Pizza

Lincoln Park's best-kept deep-dish secret — caramelised cheese crust, cash only, no reservations. Arrive before 6pm to avoid a long wait. Order the sausage.

3

Day 3

Chicago Riverwalk Morning Walk

Start the morning with a walk along the entire Riverwalk from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street — about 2.5km of waterfront with café terraces, kayak rentals, and great bridge views. Best before 10am when it's quiet.

Willis Tower Skydeck

Go up the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) before midday — the Skydeck glass boxes that extend over the edge are genuinely thrilling and visibility is best in the morning. Book online to save $5.

West Loop Neighbourhood Wander

Spend the final afternoon in the West Loop — specifically Fulton Market Street has transformed into Chicago's best food and design district. Walk from Halsted to Morgan Street to see how the city is reinventing itself.

🍽️

Lou Mitchell's

A Chicago institution since 1923 on the edge of the Loop — proper diner breakfast with bottomless coffee and malted milk balls handed out while you wait. Go before 9am for a table without a queue.
