Athens is where Western civilisation began — a chaotic, beautiful, sun-baked city where you can walk from the world's best-preserved ancient monuments to vibrant neighbourhood street markets in under fifteen minutes. The city has transformed dramatically in recent years: districts like Monastiraki, Koukaki, and Exarchia now offer excellent cafés and restaurants alongside their ancient fame.

Don't miss
Visit the Acropolis at opening time (8am sharp in summer) — you'll have the Parthenon largely to yourself for the first 45 minutes. The afternoon crowds are brutal; a morning visit is not optional, it's essential.
Eat souvlaki at Kostas on Plateia Agias Irinis in Monastiraki — the pork souvlaki with tomato and paprika sauce is €2.50 and has been made the same way since 1950. It's so popular they sell out and close by early afternoon.
Take the tram from Syntagma to Glyfada beach (45 min, €1.40) — Athens has a proper urban riviera that most visitors ignore. Hire a sun lounger at Asteras beach club or find a free rocky spot and swim in the Saronic Gulf.
Spend two hours in the National Archaeological Museum (Patission 44) on a weekday morning — it's the finest collection of ancient Greek art in the world and remarkably uncrowded outside peak hours. The Antikythera Mechanism is here.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Acropolis & Parthenon
Book tickets online before you arrive (€20 in high season) and arrive at 8am opening. Walk the full Sacred Rock circuit — Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike — and take the south slope path down through the Theatre of Dionysus.
Acropolis Museum
Walk five minutes from the Acropolis to this superb modern museum (€15). The Parthenon Gallery on the top floor is built at the same orientation as the temple itself — you can see the real Acropolis through the glass walls as you look at the friezes. Spend 90 minutes minimum.
Monastiraki neighbourhood & flea market
Spend the afternoon in Monastiraki — the central square has a small but atmospheric flea market every day. Browse the antique shops on Ifestou Street and walk up through Plaka's marble lanes at dusk.
Diporto Agoras
A legendary Athens institution hidden in the central market area (Theatrou 9, look for the stairs going down) — no menu, no sign, cash only. The owners tell you what's available; the revithia (chickpea soup) is extraordinary. Lunch only, closes around 4pm.
Day 2
Athens Central Market (Varvakios)
Open from 7am — walk through the covered meat and fish halls at Athinas Street. It's vivid, loud, and genuinely functional. The spice and olive shops on the surrounding streets are excellent for edible souvenirs.
National Archaeological Museum
Give yourself 2–3 hours in the world's greatest collection of ancient Greek artefacts. The Bronze Age finds from Mycenae, the Cycladic figurines, and the Antikythera Mechanism are unmissable. Arrive when it opens (8:30am) for smaller crowds.
Exarchia neighbourhood walk
Athens' anarchist neighbourhood — covered in murals, full of cheap cafés and independent bookshops. Walk Stournari Street and the area around Exarchia Square for a side of Athens most tourists never see. Perfectly safe by day.
Rozalia
A neighbourhood taverna in Exarchia (Valtetsiou 58) with a lovely courtyard garden — the meze spread, grilled octopus, and cold Mythos beer make for a perfect Athens evening. No frills, very local.
Day 3
Cape Sounion day trip
Hire a car or take the KTEL bus from Pedion Areos (€7 each way, 2 hours) to the Temple of Poseidon perched on a cliff above the Aegean. Byron carved his name into a column in 1810. Go in the morning, swim at the beach below, leave before sunset tours arrive.
Piraeus port & fish tavernas
On the way back from Sounion, stop in Piraeus at the Mikrolimano harbour — a small circular port lined with fish restaurants. Order grilled sea bream and watch the yachts come in. Far better value than tourist-facing Athens centre.
Kolonaki shopping & hilltop sundowner
Back in Athens, spend the late afternoon in Kolonaki — the upscale neighbourhood at the foot of Lycabettus. Walk up the hill via the steps (20 min) or take the funicular (€7 return) for a final sunset over the city.
Oikonomou
A classic Kolonaki mezedopoleio on Karneadou Street — order the taramosalata, the grilled halloumi, and a carafe of house white. Packed with Athenians who've been eating here for decades.
