Visit Nungwi Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond at low tide around 6am when the turtles are most active and the crowds haven't arrived. Entry is a small donation; you can swim alongside the green turtles.
Watch the sunset from the rooftop of Emerson on Hurumzi in Stone Town — the hotel charges a cover for non-guests at sunset but it's worth every dollar for the 360° view over the old town and the harbour.

Day 1
Stone Town: Old Fort & Darajani Market
Start at the 17th-century Arab Fort (free entry, open all day) then walk five minutes to Darajani Market — the working fish and spice market that locals use every morning. Go before 9am for the full sensory experience.
Palace Museum (Beit el-Sahel)
The former Sultan's palace on the seafront is small but surprisingly absorbing, with original furniture and photographs of Zanzibar's final ruling dynasty. Budget an hour; entry is around $3.
Sunset at Livingstone Beach Restaurant
Walk north along the Stone Town seafront to Livingstone Beach as the sun drops — the dhow silhouettes at golden hour are a classic Zanzibar image. Order a cold Kilimanjaro beer and watch the fishing boats come in.
The Rock Restaurant
Book the lunchtime seating in advance — this iconic restaurant sits on a coral rock in the sea off Michanvi Beach and serves fresh grilled seafood with Indian Ocean views on all sides.
Day 2
Nungwi Beach morning swim
Take a shared taxi north (about 1.5 hours, $5–8) to Nungwi — the beach here stays swimmable at all tides unlike many east-coast beaches. Arrive before 10am to claim a good spot before day-trippers arrive.
Mnarani Marine Turtle Pond
Walk five minutes east along the beach to the small turtle conservation lagoon where rescued green and hawksbill turtles are rehabilitated. You can enter the water with them — one of the most accessible wildlife encounters on the island.
Snorkelling at Kendwa Rocks
Head back along the beach to Kendwa for an afternoon snorkel off the reef — fins and mask rental is available from beach operators for around $5. The soft coral here is intact and fish life is dense.
Langi Langi Beach Bungalows Restaurant
Relaxed beach restaurant in Nungwi with excellent grilled catch-of-the-day, fresh coconut rice, and no tourist markup — sit outside on the sand for lunch.
Day 3
Spice Farm Tour — Kizimbani
Arrange a morning tour (most guesthouses book these for $20–30 including transport) to a working spice farm in the island's green centre. Mrembo or Mapinduzi Farm give an authentic experience away from the large group tours.
Prison Island (Changuu)
Take a 20-minute boat from Stone Town to the tiny island that houses giant Aldabra tortoises — some over 100 years old. The snorkelling off the jetty is also excellent. Budget $25–30 for the boat return and entry.
Forodhani Gardens Night Market
End your last evening at the waterfront night market — arrive at 7pm when stalls are fully set up and order Zanzibari pizza, chips mayai, and urojo (a tangy Swahili soup). Eat while watching the dhows drift across the harbour.
Lukmaan Restaurant
A Stone Town institution with no-frills Swahili home cooking — pilau, biryani, and coconut bean stew served at communal tables. No alcohol, cash only, and very cheap. Go for lunch when the food is freshest.
