Nairobi is East Africa's commercial hub and the only major capital with a national park inside city limits, where lions roam against a skyline backdrop. It's the launchpad for Kenyan safaris but rewards a few days on its own for the Karen suburbs, Giraffe Centre, and a thriving Afro-fusion restaurant scene.

Don't miss
Visit the Giraffe Centre in Langata before 9am — you can hand-feed Rothschild giraffes (one of the world's rarest species) from a raised platform at eye level. Adults and juveniles, completely relaxed. Book online for $20; busiest between 10am-noon.
Buy a bag of Kenya AA coffee direct from a roaster — Dormans on Westlands has been roasting since 1950, and their Kericho estate single origin is outstanding. The city's artisan coffee scene (Artcaffe, Nairobi Java House) is genuinely world-class.
Do a dawn game drive in Nairobi National Park — the park opens at 6am and the hour between sunrise and 7:30am is when lions are most active before the heat sets in. You can arrange a half-day drive with a guide from the main gate for under $100 including park fees.
Eat nyama choma (roasted goat) at Carnivore restaurant in Langata on a weekend lunchtime — it's a tourist institution but the all-you-can-eat rotisserie is a genuine experience and the live music nights on Fridays are where Nairobi's middle class actually socialises.
Travel tips
- →Use Uber or Bolt rather than street taxis — they're cheap, metered, and safer
- →Avoid driving yourself; Nairobi traffic is notoriously brutal
- →Book Nairobi National Park early-morning game drives to spot rhino before the heat
