Mombasa is Kenya's steamy coastal city, where Swahili, Arab, Portuguese, and Indian influences mingle in the alleys of the Old Town around Fort Jesus. North and south of the city are some of East Africa's finest white-sand beaches like Diani and Nyali, with coral reefs offshore and easy combinations with safaris in Tsavo.

Fort Jesus UNESCO World Heritage Site is best visited at opening time (8 AM) before tour groups arrive — the Portuguese-built coral fort has extraordinary ocean views and a small but excellent museum of Swahili maritime history. Budget two hours and hire one of the on-site guides for KSh 500 to get the full depth of the story.

🍖

Eat at Barka Restaurant in Old Town on a Friday lunchtime — this is where Mombasa families come for the weekly biryani ya mbuzi (goat biryani). Arrive before 1:30 PM because it genuinely sells out, and you will share a table with someone who has eaten there every week for twenty years.

Book the Tamarind Evening Dhow Dinner Cruise on Tudor Creek — the dhow departs at 6:30 PM with a dawa cocktail welcome, sails past the lit Fort Jesus, and serves a full Swahili seafood dinner on the water. It is a set-piece tourist experience, but a genuinely excellent one. Book a day ahead.

🦒

Haller Park in Bamburi (formerly a cement quarry, now a wildlife sanctuary) lets you hand-feed giraffes and observe hippos at close range in a way that feels nothing like a zoo. Go on a weekday morning when the school groups are absent — the giraffe feeding session runs at fixed times posted at the entrance, costing a few hundred shillings.
