Eat soto betawi (Jakarta's rich coconut milk beef soup) at a street stall in Pasar Santa market in South Jakarta — it's the version locals actually eat, not the tourist-restaurant interpretation. Order it with rice cake (ketupat) and extra emping crackers.

The National Gallery of Indonesia on Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur houses the country's finest collection of modern Indonesian art and is almost always uncrowded — free entry on Sundays. Look for the massive Raden Saleh oil paintings.
