Almaty is Kazakhstan's former capital and most cosmopolitan city, set dramatically against the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains with skiing at Shymbulak just a cable car away. Tree-lined streets, Soviet-era landmarks like the Zenkov Cathedral, and a buzzing cafe and craft beer scene make it a surprisingly easy and rewarding stop in Central Asia.

Big Almaty Lake: this glacial lake at 2,511 metres turns an impossible shade of turquoise-green in summer. Go on a weekday and arrive by 9 AM — the light is best in the morning and you beat the domestic tourist rush. Take a taxi from the city (around 3,500–5,000 KZT) since public buses don't run the full route. Bring a warm layer: it is often 10°C colder than the city.
Shymbulak gondola in summer: the ski resort's cable car runs year-round and reaches 3,200 metres. In July and August the upper slopes are wildflower meadows with views across the Zailiisky Alatau range. Take bus 12 from the city centre to the base station, then the cable car (around 5,000 KZT return). The mountain restaurants at the top charge city prices, not tourist prices.
Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar) on a Saturday morning: the covered market near Panfilov Park sells the famous Aport apples (a local variety the size of a grapefruit), Irimshik cheese, fermented mare's milk (qymyz), and piled walnuts. Arrive by 9 AM for the best produce and the least crowded aisles. The basement level has a compelling meat and dairy hall.
Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) at Panfilov Park: a 1907 entirely wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral — no nails used in construction — painted yellow and white against the dark Tien Shan backdrop. Go early morning when light comes through the interior windows and the park benches are occupied by chess players. Free entry.
