Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at opening time (9am, or 10am Saturday) and on a weekday — it's one of the world's great religious buildings and gets genuinely crowded by 11am. The white marble courtyard in morning light is stunning. Dress modestly; robes are provided free at the entrance.
Book Louvre Abu Dhabi tickets online for a weekday morning — the Jean Nouvel-designed 'rain of light' dome is worth the visit on its own, and the permanent collection is a genuinely radical experiment in universal art history. Allow three to four hours.
If you're there in November, Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix tickets at Yas Marina Circuit sell out early — book a year ahead. Outside race season, the Yas Marina circuit does public track experiences and the surrounding Yas Island entertainment district is worth a half-day regardless.
Take the ferry from Mina Zayed Port to the Breakwater (QR 1 AED) and walk out to the Heritage Village on the Abu Dhabi Breakwater peninsula — it's a small but genuine reconstruction of pre-oil Emirati village life, and the views of the skyline from the water's edge are the best in the city.

Day 1
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Arrive at 9am sharp — this is non-negotiable for Abu Dhabi. One of the world's most beautiful mosques, with 82 domes, 1,000 columns, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet. Spend 90 minutes and take time with the detail.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Book tickets in advance and head to Saadiyat Island for the afternoon. Jean Nouvel's perforated dome filters light in a way that transforms the experience of moving between the permanent galleries. The universal civilisation galleries are genuinely thought-provoking.
Saadiyat Beach Sunset
After the Louvre, walk to Saadiyat Public Beach (5-minute walk) for the sunset — white sand, warm Gulf water, and almost no crowds compared to Dubai's beaches.
Fouquet's Abu Dhabi (Louvre)
The Louvre's waterfront restaurant serves French-inflected café food — excellent croque-monsieur and tarte tatin — with views of the dome. Lunch here is a seamless extension of the museum visit.
Day 2
Yas Island Morning
Head to Yas Island and walk the Yas Marina Circuit — the F1 track is accessible to walkers outside race season and the circuit loop takes about an hour on foot with great skyline views.
Yas Waterworld or Ferrari World
Yas Island has two major theme parks — Ferrari World (home of Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster) and Yas Waterworld. Book tickets online for a discount and go on a weekday to avoid school groups.
Abu Dhabi Corniche Evening
Return to the main island and walk the 8km Corniche beachfront promenade at dusk — the city skyline backdrop to the west and the beach on the other side make it one of the Gulf's best urban walks.
Hakkasan Abu Dhabi (Emirates Palace)
Cantonese fine dining inside the Emirates Palace hotel — the dim sum lunch is the best value entry point. The har gow (prawn dumplings) and black pepper rib-eye fried rice are benchmarks. Smart casual required.
Day 3
Emirates Palace Walk-Through
You don't need to be a guest — walk into the Emirates Palace hotel lobby for a coffee (they serve legitimate gold-flecked cappuccinos for AED 50) and take in the sheer scale of the building. It remains one of the world's most extraordinary hotels.
Heritage Village & Breakwater
Walk out to the Breakwater for the best Abu Dhabi skyline view, then visit the Heritage Village (free entry) for a genuinely interesting look at pre-oil Emirati life — boat-building, falconry, and pearl diving tools.
Mangrove National Park Kayak
Rent a kayak for two hours from Black Turtle Kayak on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi island — paddling through the UNESCO-protected mangrove forest with the city skyline behind you is an unexpectedly peaceful final experience.
Byblos Sur Mer
Long-established Lebanese restaurant on the Corniche with a terrace directly over the water. The mezze is extensive and excellent — order the kibbeh nayyeh, fattoush, and mixed grill for the table.
