Don't miss
Find Ganso Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley) in Susukino after dark — it's a narrow lane of 17 tiny shops, some seating fewer than ten people. Go late (after 9pm) to skip the longest queues and order the buttery corn miso at Teshikaga Ramen.
Head to Nijo Market at 7am when the stalls are freshest — pick a crab or sea urchin bowl from the stalls inside the back alleys, not the tourist-facing counters at the front. Prices are cheaper and quality is the same.
Walk the Hokkaido University ginkgo avenue (Icho Namiki) in late October — 70 trees turn a deep gold along a 380-metre path. Locals treat it as a near-sacred autumn ritual and it's completely free.
At the Sapporo Beer Garden, skip the à la carte menu and book the all-you-can-eat jingisukan (Genghis Khan lamb BBQ) course — you grill at the table, pour your own freshly tapped Sapporo Classic (only available in Hokkaido), and the whole thing costs around ¥4,500 per person.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Odori Park & TV Tower
Start at the green spine of the city — Odori Park runs 12 blocks east to west and gives you an instant feel for Sapporo's scale. Climb the Sapporo TV Tower at the east end for a city overview (¥1,000); the park below is where the Snow Festival stages its biggest sculptures each February.
Hokkaido University Campus Walk
Walk north to the university's open campus — locals stroll here in all seasons. In autumn the ginkgo avenue is unmissable; in other seasons the poplar-lined main road and old stone buildings are quietly beautiful and completely free.
Susukino Night District
Sapporo's entertainment district comes alive after dark. Navigate the neon-lit streets to find Ramen Alley (Ganso Ramen Yokocho) and choose a shop based purely on the smell drifting out of the door — a classic evening move.
Teshikaga Ramen (Ganso Ramen Yokocho)
Tiny nine-seat shop inside Ramen Alley; order the Hokkaido Zenbu Nose Miso with snow crab, butter, and corn — the definitive Sapporo bowl.
Day 2
Nijo Market at Dawn
Arrive at 7am when the seafood is just in — sea urchin, king crab, and scallops are laid out fresh. Eat a kaisen-don (rice bowl with raw seafood) from one of the indoor stalls in the back section; prices here are more honest than the tourist-facing counters.
Sapporo Beer Garden & Museum
The red-brick 1890s brewery complex is worth visiting even if you don't drink. The free museum traces Hokkaido's development through beer. Book the all-you-can-eat jingisukan (lamb BBQ) course with unlimited Sapporo Classic on tap — the beer only exists in Hokkaido.
Maruyama Park & Hokkaido Jingu Shrine
A forested park sheltering a major Shinto shrine — extremely peaceful and frequented almost entirely by locals. In spring it's one of Hokkaido's top cherry blossom spots; in autumn the maple colours are excellent.
Umi Hachikyo
Izakaya-style seafood restaurant near Susukino famous for its exceptionally fresh Hokkaido salmon roe and grilled fish — arrive before 7pm or expect a queue.
Day 3
Day Trip to Otaru
Take the 37-minute JR train (¥750) to this photogenic port town. Arrive by 9am to beat day-trippers and walk the snow-dusted canal before the tour groups arrive. The 19th-century stone warehouses are now home to cafes and sake producers.
Otaru Glass & Music Box Studios
The side streets off Sakaimachi-dori are lined with artisan glass studios and music box workshops. Many let you watch craftspeople at work or try simple glassblowing yourself for around ¥2,000.
Otaru Sake Tasting
Tanaka Sake Brewery near the canal offers free samples of its cold-climate sake — Hokkaido's pure snowmelt water produces a clean, dry style distinct from anything you'd find in Honshu. Buy a bottle to take back.
Masazushi (Otaru)
Otaru's most celebrated sushi counter — the city's harbour means the fish arrives hours old. Arrive at opening (11:30am) to avoid a wait; the kaiseki set lunch is excellent value at around ¥3,500.
