Los Angeles is less a city than a sprawl of distinct neighbourhoods — bohemian Venice, polished Santa Monica, taco-stand-rich Boyle Heights, and the canyons of Malibu — connected by freeways and surprising hiking trails. It rewards travellers who pick two or three areas and explore deeply rather than racing across town.

Don't miss
Visit The Getty Center on a Tuesday morning (free, always — no tickets needed) when crowds are thinnest. The building itself is the spectacle: Richard Meier's travertine hilltop campus. The Impressionist collection and the rotating photography exhibits are consistently excellent.
Rent an electric bike in Venice (multiple rental stands on the boardwalk, ~$25/hr) and ride the 22-mile South Bay Bicycle Trail south to Manhattan Beach and back. Start by 8am before the boardwalk gets crowded and the temperature climbs.
Skip the tourist taco trucks and go to Guisados in Boyle Heights — the braised meat tacos (the tinga and lamb barbacoa especially) are some of the best in the city. Open from 9am, cash preferred, expect a short queue. The original Boyle Heights location beats the newer branches.
Hike the Griffith Observatory trail from the Greek Theatre parking lot at sunrise — 45 minutes up, and you'll have the city view completely to yourself before the parking lot opens to the public. The Observatory itself opens at noon on weekdays.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Venice Beach & Abbot Kinney
Start at Venice Beach boardwalk at 9am before it gets busy. Walk south past Muscle Beach and the skate park, then cut inland to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for the best independent coffee shops and boutiques in the city. Gjusta bakery opens at 8am and has the best pastries in LA.
Santa Monica Pier & Palisades Park
Drive or bike north to Santa Monica. Walk the pier (tacky but iconic), then head up to Palisades Park — the bluff-top strip of grass above Pacific Coast Highway — for the best free ocean view in the city. The farmer's market runs Saturday mornings at 3rd and Arizona.
Sunset on Malibu's PCH
Drive Pacific Coast Highway north through Malibu for golden hour. Park at El Matador State Beach (small lot, arrive by 5pm) — the sea stacks and rock arches make it far more dramatic than any Malibu beach you've seen in films.
Gjusta
A Venice institution: part bakery, part deli, part wine bar. The smoked fish plates, grain bowls, and pastries are outstanding. Expect a queue at peak times — join the line, it moves fast.
Day 2
Griffith Park & Observatory
Hike up from the Greek Theatre parking area to the Griffith Observatory — about 45 minutes uphill. The Observatory opens at noon; if you arrive before, you have the city view from the lawn to yourself. The Samuel Oschin Planetarium show inside is worth catching.
Los Feliz & Silver Lake
These adjacent hillside neighbourhoods are where LA's creative class actually lives. Walk Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz for vintage bookshops and record stores, then head down to Silver Lake Reservoir for the circular walking path with Downtown views.
The Broad & DTLA Arts District
Drive downtown to The Broad museum — free (book timed entry online), home to Jeff Koons's Tulips and Cindy Sherman's entire body of work. Walk east into the Arts District for street murals, the Hauser & Wirth gallery (free), and independent studios.
Bestia
An Italian restaurant in the Arts District that's been LA's hardest reservation for over a decade. House-made charcuterie, wood-fired dishes, and a serious natural wine list. Book 6+ weeks ahead or check for cancellations on Resy.
Day 3
The Getty Center
The Getty is free, always — arrive at 10am on a weekday for the shortest queues. Allow 3 hours minimum. Beyond the Impressionist collection, the architecture and garden (designed by Robert Irwin) and the city panorama from the terrace are the real draws.
Brentwood & Farmers Market
After the Getty, explore the Brentwood neighbourhood — very LA, very low-key. The Original Farmers Market at Fairfax and 3rd (open since 1934) is the best lunch option: dozens of independent stalls in a covered market. Not the Grove next door — the old market.
Hollywood Walk of Fame & Griffith at Dusk
Take the tourist's pilgrimage to the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard — best in the hour before dusk when the light is warm and the crowds thin. Then drive back up to Griffith Park for the city-lights view as the sun drops. Bring a jacket.
n/naka
One of America's most acclaimed restaurants: a 13-course modern kaiseki menu by Chef Niki Nakayama in Palms. Reservations open monthly on Tock and sell out in minutes — set a calendar reminder. A once-in-a-trip experience.
Travel tips
- →Rent a car — public transport is improving but still impractical for most itineraries
- →Avoid driving anywhere between 7-10am and 3-7pm
- →Book Griffith Observatory's evening telescope viewings free of charge but arrive before sunset
